Greetings,

At St Mary’s we are committed to making a difference in our world through acts of service. During Lent it was wonderful to see so many different pastoral groups finding creative and innovative way to raise funds and awareness for Project Compassion. This culminated in a house based ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ which saw Mr Belton, Mr Winter, Mrs McQueen, and Miss McBryde face a deluge of freezing cold water in the name of charity. Our Campus Minister, Mrs Helena Tutoe, then challenged me and Mr Wood to demonstrate our leadership by stepping up to the challenge. I thought it only fitting that we also included her.

Outside of the daily life of the College, a crew of our Year 11 and 12 students have been selfless giving their time to be part of our monthly Rosies outreach team. This team prepares and serves food and drink, as well as provide company, to vulnerable people in the Cairns community. I would thank to thank all the students who have attended so far this year and acknowledge Mrs McKenna and Mrs Chapman for their work with this team.

In the interest of improving mental and physical health, and reducing our carbon footprints, Miss Zappala coordinated St Mary’s first “Ride to School” event. Students and teachers rode to school from a northern and southern direction with assistance from local police before sharing a breakfast on arrival to the College. This was a wonderful community that will continue to grow in popularity and impact into the future.

Coming up on the Thursday 19th May, St Mary’s will host a “Biggest Morning Tea”. This event will be held between B and D block. Students are invited to purchase the delicious food that will be on sale with all funds going toward Cancer research. Special thanks to Ms Brophy for her leadership of this event.

Considering all the academic and extra-curricular demands of College life, it is so refreshing to see our community so active and responsible in creating a better world for all. We take inspiration from Mary and seek to animate the teachings of Jesus in forming a community that is grounded in faith, hope, and love.

God Bless
