CURRICULUM

“One person can change your life, that person is you.”

- Steven Bartlett

Welcome back to Term 2 which has commenced with many exciting performances, showcasing the breadth of talent at VCASS. A focal priority of the school has been to re-engage students back into the rhythm of a regular schedule. In particular, re-establishing classroom routines, punctuality, and the timely submission of work. In line with the 2022 Priorities Goal, some of our students thrived in the remote learning environment, others have maintained their learning progress, and some need extra learning and support.

The Year 7 and Year 9 cohorts completed an online version of NAPLAN. The advantages of the digital format included a more engaging experience for the students, adaptive questions to suit each level of ability, and faster access to valuable data for teachers. The event was conducted over 2 days with many fun activities in between tests such as mindfulness colouring, trivia, riddles, and sudoku puzzles. The writing prompt this year was about going on a journey. My favourite interpretation from a student was going on a nostalgic journey back to the 80’s! Well done to the students who have completed NAPLAN this year, who all walked away with a unique motivational quote to create a positive mindset after the busy testing period.

In Round 3 of the Debate Association of Victoria interschool competition, VCASS had multiple victories against other schools from the Melbourne region. Teams had 1 hour to prepare their speeches with a secret topic revealed on the night and no access to technology. This really challenged our teams’ ability to work under a time limit and think critically on the spot.

Ten Year 9 students will participate in the International Maths Olympiad Challenge, a global competition providing opportunities to challenge and engage high ability students. Similarly, two teams will compete in the Year 9 Maths Games Day, an all-day event in which students develop problem solving skills and have the opportunity to work collaboratively with like-minded peers.

As students prepare for the Year 10 and Year 11 exam period in Week 6, I encourage students to examine their study routines and reflect on what is most effective for best results. The aim of these exams is to simulate the environment students experience when completing VCE external exams. Create a checklist of topics for each subject, draw up a study schedule, and divide your time appropriately in the lead up to the exam. It is all about achieving balance with the time you have available.

In Term 3, students will have access to the subject selection handbook, as well as information sessions for students and teachers to make informed decisions about the best pathway in 2023. Choose what you love, what you are curious about, and what you are good at, as well as adhering to university entry requirements. Read the study designs of each VCE subject for further information about content and outcomes.
