Out and About

Year 7 Camp

"On Tuesday 1 March, seven students from the Year 9 LEAD Class got to join the Year 7 students on camp for a day; we played some fun games and worked on our leadership skills. Some leadership skills such as time management and communication. This was an extremely fun learning experience for us as we had to quickly adapt to leading a class of approximately 24 students. We worked on many skills throughout this experience, some of the main ones being how to think on our feet as well as being open-minded and seeing things from other perspectives. We would use these skills when the students were not enjoying the games, so we would have to make new ones with the equipment we had taken. Camp was quite fun and interactive. It was engaging and a lot of people seemed to get along well in the activities that were planned, and all collaborated well.  While not everything went according to plan, this allowed us the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and improve our leadership skills for the future. It was a valuable experience, getting to know what it felt like to be a teacher, we also broadened our leadership skills, needing to be a leader to the younger students at our school and be able to think up solutions to the problems aroused on the spot. Even if the Year 7 student were a bit restless they seemed to enjoy themselves.  Everyone had fun, made new friends along the way and grew a lot closer to one another. Thank you to Mr John Simon for driving us to and from camp."

"The Year 7 camp was an enjoyable experience for everyone. The day started off well with lots of activities around the camp with the Year 7 students. The activities we ran were fruit salad, octopus, capture the flag and tile hop. Overall, we all enjoyed working with Year 7 and each other. After running the morning activities, we had lunch, which was sausages in bread, watermelon and snacks. We found working alongside the Year 7 students was a tactic that seemed to work well instead of using authoritarianism to get what we need; we collaborated with the students and used their ideas. Overall, we really enjoyed the experience camp offered. Hosting the games and learning to lead the students was a wonderful opportunity to take on skills that we had learned about and employ them in those activities. The environment was also natural and vibrant, which allowed for a nice peaceful time. Subsequently, we all ended up having an enjoyable time at the camp. Thanks to Ms Kate Adriaans for her support on the day and for driving us there and back."

Swimming With The Fishes

Students in both Environmental Geography classes recently had a blast diving under and around the Blairgowrie Pier as part of their marine environment studies.  Students saw a seal pup, rays, sea stars, sea horses and a variety of fish.  They were in the capable hands of Divemasters from Diveline and had plenty of time to explore a part of the spectacular underwater world of Port Phillip Bay.

The day is organised as part of their fieldwork studies, and as well as the diving, they were expected to undertake an analysis of management techniques used in the area, as well as conducting a litter audit in an effort to establish whether litter could be having a detrimental impact on the marine environment.  Information from the day will be analysed back in class.

A big thank you to Mrs Cheryl Hodgson and Mrs Jackie Evans for making the day so successful.

SLC Camp 2022

From  Wednesday 2 to Friday 4 March, 68 of Frankston High School’s SLC members headed up to the Phillip Island Adventure Resort to embark on a memorable leadership, bonding and memory making experience.  Every student was divided into one of seven colour groups, which was each led by our amazing Year 12 student members. Everyone was encouraged to wear their colour throughout camp and everyone definitely did not disappoint with their bright and colourful clothes. Within these groups, we all participated in initiative games, team building exercises such as a Rue Goldberg challenge, and even we all put our acting skills on show for group vs group skit night!

On Day 1 we had a visit from Tayla and Ella from Project Rockit, who spoke about overcoming your fears and understanding your values. Later that night we had a disco, which had a theme of childhood, everyone dressed up in costumes like the wiggles, the minions, babies, in the night garden characters, Elmo and cookie monster, Powerpuff girls and so so so much more! Everyone had such an awesome time dancing into the night.

On Day 2 we played the most intense game of laser strike I have ever witnessed, in the end orange, pink and red team defeated green, blue and purple team in a nail biter tiebreaker game of ‘capture the flag’. We then had a visit from our next guest speaker, and SLC alumni, Elliot Willis, who came to tell us all about his journey as a ‘muso’ in the Australian Music Industry. We were also lucky enough to be played Elliott’s new single that was just released, called ‘Freeway’, and he even created a song on the spot for us named ‘JR on a chair’ which was loved by all.

We also had a visit from Ms Tiffany Greenhill and Mr John Simon, who took us through a student voice and agency session, helping us to understand the meanings of the words, student voice, agency and leadership, as well as learning about how we believe our school activates student voice, agency and leadership into our school lives. Thank you to Mr Andrew Batchelor for visiting also. We ended the day by performing the skits that each group had created; this is always a highlight of camp!

Finally on the last day of camp, which is always an emotional one, we had a mindfulness session run by Mr John Russel (JR), which is always an opportunity for people to reflect on the amazing couple of days we had just had, and to catch up on some sleep for those who needed it. Throughout the duration of the camp students got to together with their SLC teams that they would be working with throughout the year, discussing goals and what each group would like to achieve in 2022. These groups are Student Voice and Agency, Events and New Members, Communications, The Optima and the student podcast, Wellbeing, International and Community Engagement, and Student Engagement and House Spirit.

I would just like to thank everyone who helped making this camp so special this year, myself and the other year 12s truly could not have done it without the help of such amazing teachers, so thank you Ms Sarah Bahramis, Mr Isaac Bakker, Mrs Melissa Donegan, Mr Mal Burt, Ms Kate Burgess, Ms Georgie Long, Mrs Jess Bambridge, Mrs Kirsten Bakker and Ms Nicole Dickinson. SLC camp is such a highlight of the SLC calendar and will be a memory I will always remember and cherish.
