Victorian Certificate of

Applied Learning (VCAL)

Senior VCAL

The Year 12 students are currently working conscientiously on planning, developing, and resourcing their Individual Projects. This is a challenging assignment, and it is gratifying to see the initiative and creative thinking involved.

Throughout Term 2, each student will lead a session that encourages an audience, comprising Year 11 and 12 students, to learn a new skill or develop their knowledge of a particular subject. Good luck to the following students as they prepare to deliver their presentations:

Chloe Adlington - Arts and Crafts

Kaitlyn Bailey - Why Fit In When You Were Born To Stand Out

Carla Fode - Different Styles of Interior Design

Keira Hately-Marks – Lifestyles 1940s -1990s

Angela Imperatori - Designing Mood Boards

Ruby L’Huillier – Inspiring Women

Serena Muscariello - Self-Care

Olivia Njari - Mindfulness

Chiara Picciotto - Stress and Anxiety

FareShare

FareShare is Australia’s largest charity kitchen. FareShare rescues surplus food and cooks free, nutritious meals for people doing it tough. Their vision is a ‘A society where food is not wasted and no one goes without’.

Recently, the VCAL students visited the FareShare Kitchens as part of their Enrichment Day program. Over the two weeks each group prepared over 3000 meals for people in need. It was an amazing exercise which opened our eyes, not only to the workings of a commercial kitchen, but also to a charity organisation, food safety protocols, teamwork and a deeper understanding of the vulnerabilities in our society.

The VCAL students developed an understanding of food insecurity. They learnt that there is no typical person who experiences food insecurity. They now know that food insecurity is underreported. People experiencing food insecurity may fear judgment, and they may show incredible resilience and skills in managing and masking their struggle. For this reason, food insecurity in Australia is often referred to as a ‘hidden issue’.

Student Reflections

I felt grateful to have spent some time at an organisation that supports people in need. It has made me curious about where the food is delivered and who are the recipients.

Chloe Adlington

Year 12

I enjoyed learning about FareShare. It is a great organisation that enables disadvantaged people to access high quality food that has been prepared in safe and hygienic conditions.

Serena Muscariello

Year 12

I felt grateful for the opportunity to prepare food that will make a difference in the lives of others.

Olivia Njari

Year 12

I was able to participate in activities that supported people less fortunate than me. Hopefully, having access to nutritious food may reduce some of the stress in their lives.

Alexandra Strom

Year 12

Working with other volunteers enabled me to learn what they do each day and how they assist others. I was really happy to know that the volunteer work I was doing was helping people in need.
