Girton Celebrates Diversity at the Bendigo Inter-faith Council Dinner

The annual Bendigo Inter-Faith Dinner was held on March 17th at the All Seasons Hotel. Mrs Naughton, Ms Fielder and Mr Smeelie accompanied a group of six students from Years 10-12 to this event and by all reports, it was a valuable and enlightening evening for all. This year’s theme was “A Glimpse of Hope: The service of Kindness”. Considering the many challenges of the last two years this was a message that resonated with those present and reminded us all of the power of positivity and hope. We are indeed fortunate to live in a vibrant, multicultural community that celebrates difference and shares one common goal.

Please enjoy some of our students’ reflections on the evening:

“Having the opportunity to hear a diverse range of opinions and belief systems in a respectful and supportive environment at the Interfaith Dinner was incredible. The engagement and appreciation from differing cultures was so valuable. I think it epitomises how, despite our differences, whether they be cultural, lingual or religious, there is always the ability to find harmony and we should celebrate and enrich ourselves in these spaces in attempts to create a multicultural society where everyone feels welcome.”

“Attending the Interfaith Dinner, I was struck by the collective pride and effort that had been put into the event by these leaders of faith; divided by their personal creeds, but united by a common desire for harmonious and productive collaboration. Witnessing how this atmosphere affected local leaders and those of us from the Girton table was something special and I sincerely hope that next year we get the opportunity to attend again. Special mention must go to the Venerable Thich Phuoc Tan OAM, Abbot of Quang Minh Temple in Braybrook, who was an exceptional guest speaker; He is a true ambassador of the Interfaith spirit.”

“The Inter-Faith council's dinner was an immersive, eye-opening experience that was a privilege to attend. It provided an opportunity to be inspired, to question, to learn and to explore one's own faith. Plus, the lemon tart was delicious. The highlight of the evening, a speech from the Venerable Thich Phuoc Tan, created a brilliant insight into beautiful prospects that arose during COVID, and spread a message of hope. All in all, a brilliant night that anyone would be lucky to attend.”
