Novotel Visit
What a fantastic visit to Novotel Wollongong. Year 8 students and some keen yr 10 students attended a back of house tour at Novotel. As a group we explored behind scenes of the kitchen, maintenance and housekeeping to name a few. Our HR escort Chantel was brilliant and kept us moving and well informed.
Being able to explore new places of work, hear about what is expected to get a job and the variety of opportunities such a place offers was fantastic. To top things off students were surprised and impressed to know that the current General Manager Steve Savic was an ex-student from LIHS. Steve was so pleased to have us come and visit and he explained his journey from school and was extremely proud of being a student from Lake Illawarra HS.
Thank you Novotel staff, for letting us into your world of work and happily involving us by freely talking about the jobs you do. The students who attended were excellent ambassadors of our school and asked brilliant questions. It was a pleasure to take them.
Thanks are also extended to Windang Club who provided the transport for our students to attend the excursion.
Fire Cadets
A group of Year 9 and 10 students have this year been involved in the NSW Rural Fire Cadet program at school. This is a 10 week program over term 3 where volunteers from the NSW Royal Fire Brigade conduct the course each week. Students are suited up in fire protection gear, have undertaken theory lessons on work health and safety, instructions on how to use fire equipment and hoses and then practiced their skills on fire trucks out on Morley Park
So far, the students while working in different teams are learning how to problem solve, communicate and work quickly and efficiently. By the end of the term students will be able to display their skills to family and friends and hopefully won’t get too soaked in the meantime.

Year 10 Mock Interview Day
Year 10 students had the opportunity to practice their skills and prepare for future interviews by taking part in the Mock Interview Day on the 16th August. Some students were very nervous, others confident and well prepared. Preparation for the Mock Interview Day was conducted through all English classes and students received additional interview skills and practice. Year 10 now have a resume and portfolio and some knowledge on how to be prepared for interviews. Feedback and overall evaluation of the ten-minute impression during the interviews has been returned to students, which will assist them in preparing for future interviews.
