General Information

Positive Behaviour for Learning
Promoting Positive Behaviour for Learning.
As a PBL school LIHS rewards students who are respectful, responsible and safe in every setting.
Our school values:
RESPECT ⎜RESPONSIBILITY ⎜SAFETY
All classes have recently completed a ‘Right Place, Right Time’ and ‘Manners’ lessons. These presentations generated great discussion and problem-solving ideas.
Future specific PBL lessons will continue to occur so as to further create safe, effective teaching and learning environments.
We show RESPECT by being tolerant and accepting everyone, being polite and considerate of others. Using appropriate language and wearing school uniform.
We show RESPONSIBILITY by being at the right place, right time. Staying on task in class and being prepared. Following procedures and instructions including putting rubbish in the bin and caring for our surroundings.
We show SAFETY by following instructions. Following a 'hands off' policy and having a smoke free zone.
Weekly PBL Focus Values throughout Term 3 will continue to remain a high priority in all settings. Specific PBL lessons will also continue to occur so as to encourage active learning in classrooms around the school.
Focus of the Fortnight is: RESPONSIBILITY
We show responsibility when we follow teacher instructions promptly.
Students will be on time for school and their next class.
VIVOs will be rewarded to all students who are prompt to school/class and exhibit appropriate behaviour both in the classroom and the playground.
We show responsibility when we take every opportunity to succeed.

Book Week 2018
G’day everyone
Wow what an amazing week we just had. Book week has come and gone for another year and I think that many would agree with me that this year was our best yet.
Our theme this year was “Find Your Treasure” and celebrated that every book is a treasure to someone.
During book week, we saw some of our biggest borrowing numbers in a very long time and many teachers commented that they were struck with amazement to see their students walking around the playground with their noses in books.
We successfully gave away over 30 boxes worth of books to new homes. We were very pleased to see quite a few people come back time and time again to check out what books we were giving away each day.
We had a different storyteller each period regaling our students with tales and they did an amazing job of rekindling in our students (and some teachers I might add) a love for the narrative.
We also had a trivia session and on Wednesday we had a book week COSPLAY event. Some of the costumes that were presented by our staff and students were stunning to say the least. We were particularly impressed to see that everyone stuck to our theme of finding treasure with their costumes. Very impressive Lake Illawarra High.
With the close of Book Week, I would like to challenge all of you to dive into the realm of reading and in particular, try to find a book that you can truly love.
One of the greatest challenges of reading is actually starting a book. Those first 50 pages can really feel like a grind but I promise you if you persevere, you will experience a world like no other. Often we are blocked by hurdles which are either personal or, far more commonly social. Phrases “I don’t read, that’s effort”, “Reading is boring”, and “I’ve never read. I’m not a reader” are ones that I’ve heard way too many times.
Reading is a personnel joy and should not be impacted at all by what others perceive or by your own perceived identity as a “person that doesn’t read”.
We have recently finished organising our Fiction collection into Genres which means that we will be able to find just the right book for you should you choose to undertake this challenge.
So go on Lake, don’t let book week be the end of your reading journey. Find your treasure by coming to see us in the library and grabbing a book.
All the best,
Mr Nairn
Librarian.

SRC excursion
On Monday the 27/8/18, three Year 7 students, Shae Mann, Ella Riley and Kirra Hughes represented our school at the annual Youth Round Table initiative, at Dapto Ribbonwood Centre. Every Year our local member of parliament Stephen Jones, meets with young students from the region, to discuss issues affecting young people.
Our students represented the school with great pride, and actively contributed to discussion on mental health, housing affordability, education resources and conservation of the environment. Stephen Jones takes the issues put forward by young people to the national parliament in Canberra.
Our students gained a lot from the experience, and are gaining valuable skills that will assist them as future leaders.

SRC Co-ordinator.
