Rail Safety Talks

On Monday 14th May and Tuesday 15th May, our Year 7-10 students were involved in Rail Safety Talks, which is a joint presentation provided by NSW Trains and NSW Police. The students were provided with key safety messages and statistics related to train safety in NSW and our local area. They also had the opportunity to discuss strategies to stay safe around trains and ask questions of our presenters to clarify their understanding. This important visit has links with our PDHPE Curriculum and extends upon our Road Safety and Risk Taking programs. This was a wonderful opportunity provided to our students, as it was engaging and informative, with all students strengthening their understanding and skills in regards to road and train travel. A big thank you to Craig and Darren from NSW Trains.

Quota Public Speaking

Brittany Skeen and Claudia Calci represented Lake Illawarra High School at Quota International’s annual Student of the Year Quest last week. Their participation in this competition includes an individual interview that tests their general knowledge of current affairs, a speech delivered to an audience on a topic that is close to their hearts and minds, as well as an impromptu speech on a word that they receive just before they speak.  This occurs before a panel of judges. The school’s students were well prepared and eloquent in their public speaking. They showed impressive knowledge on their topics of STEM and Reading, and represented our school with poise and dignity. Congratulations to our Year 11 students.

Mathematics

Welcome to term 2.

We are currently teaching the new Standard Mathematics in Year 11. Next year, 2019, the new Advanced and Extension  syllabuses will start in Year 11.

Year 11 Standard will get an assignment due Week 8. Year 11 Advanced and Extension have a test with notes - Adv (Week 8) and Ext (Week 10).

Also, Year 12 have their next assessment task in Week 7 and should get their notification and revision soon. We also encourage them to start their revision for the trial and HSC examinations by starting the past papers. The first one usually takes at least two weeks to do as they have to look up notes and ask questions to remember how to do the paper. If they start now, by the time they get to the Trial they will be ready to do the paper in the two (Ext), two and a half (Standard) or three (Advanced) hours provided and their stress will be lower as they know what to do and how to achieve their maximum mark.

Year 10 will have a Half Yearly exam in Week 6.

It is important that students do revision, particularly the past papers that are provided, as it gives them the best opportunity to perform to the best of their ability. It also means that they study the right topics and style of questions.

Please contact us with any concerns about your child’s learning, we are trying to improve the outcomes of all students, especially those who wish to achieve a better understanding of Mathematics.
