Valentine’s Day Fundraiser
As the Brentwood Community’s 2020 School Captains, we were more than fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to instil positive change within Brentwood, and our 2020 vision is to strive for a sense of connectivity within the school environment. The four of us came together and decided that we would represent our vision with the simplicity of LEGO (Love, Engagement, Gratitude and Opportunity). This acronym represents each of our personalities as well as stands for our goal in every term of the year, thus Term 1 being a time of celebrating our differences and coming together as one to love our community.
What’s a better way to celebrate love than on Valentine’s day! We decided to sell real roses, and then donate the proceeds to the State Schools Relief who are currently helping students affected by bushfires to get proper school supplies, so that we could spread love to other students in less fortunate circumstances. In accordance with the English Department, we were able to create 400 tags, each with a specialised poem or phrase that celebrated love as well as representing all the colours of the LGBTQ+ flag to celebrate the diversity within the community. Those tags were then put inside the sleeves of the roses with our volunteer team who we are immensely grateful for. From Monday the 10th of February to Thursday the 13th of February, we sold all 400 roses, with a profit of approximately $800 to donate. On Friday the 14th of February, the House Captains as well as the School Captains delivered the roses in Period 3.
The entire experience taught us that even though implementing change is hard work, the smiles on our peers faces after receiving a rose was worth all of it, and we are beyond grateful that we were given the opportunity to engage the Brentwood community and simultaneously spread love on Valentines Day.
