Good Luck for Transition Year 6!

Over the next couple of weeks we have lots of grade 6s taking part in transition days with their new secondary schools. As always, this change can be a little daunting to some, however, we’re confident in your abilities to adapt to this change and to view it with optimism and commitment. You will make new friends and you will have some troubles as you go. The key is having a strong network around you to help you navigate through these years.

We wish you all the best on your transition day and look forward to hearing all about it when you return.

For parents who are wondering what year 7 is all about, there is a great series on ABC iView called My Year 7 Life that you can watch and get real feelings and thoughts from past year 7s.

This Fortnight’s B+ Theme is… Stress Management and Optimism

This is the first week of the fortnight that our classes are focussing on the theme of ‘Stress Management and Optimism’ with the kids. This element is included to support students when dealing with stressful situations and also to empower them to cope with change. The fortnight will aim to address some key learning around:

Recognising their own emotions and how these affect their actions.

Listing a range of strategies to manage physical, social and emotional change.

The use of goal-setting and positive thinking to help with change.

Identifying their personal strengths and how they can use these in dealing with change.

Describing ways in which they can self-calm (e.g. Meditation, partaking in enjoyable activities, list making, etc).

If time permits, it would be great if all families are able to follow up with some discussions with your child around the above at home as well.

Mason Works to Raise Sunsmart Awareness

Last Friday we had Mason Trewin from Grade 6 present his story about an Aunt’s battle with skin cancer at assembly. Anyone who was in the gym would acknowledge how difficult of a task Mason had and he did an amazing job delivering some key messages around being sunsmart. Well done Mase! We’re all really proud of you.

Following on from assembly, Mason and Justine Osborne (pictured) from Cancer Council Victoria then presented some sessions with our year 5/6 students to reiterate the importance of being sunsmart even when it doesn’t feel too hot or sunny outside. Pictured are some of our year 5s with their UV bands which help to show when the UV index is high and harm can be likely without sunsmart protection.

We encourage all of our families to be working with the kids by applying sunscreen before attending school each day. To support a follow on application, each of our classrooms have a supply of sunscreen. If you’re child has sensitivity to sunscreen, we encourage you to send along a supply that you know is best for them.

PLP Thank You Afternoon Tea and Meeting

A reminder to all of our PLP group that this Friday (6/12) @ 2:30pm we are holding a special thank you afternoon tea in appreciation for all of the wonderful work that has taken place over the year. After some afternoon tea, we seek some feedback on a couple of areas, those being:

Out current report cycle and how that all went.

A potential social arm of the PLP committee to support parent-parent connections in the community.

We look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible and please don’t hesitate to send another representative along from your class if you are unable to attend.

Koorie Kids Totems Taking Shape

Last week saw Janet Curtain join the Koorie Kids to support the development of our totem poles around the cubby area at the back of the school. Janet is a local Aboriginal artist who has completed many murals and artworks around the Ballarat area and in conjunction with Tim White (Brody’s dad) have supported the team to almost complete their first totem. A massive thank you to Tim, Janet, Gaye, Georgie and the kids for all of their hard work in pulling it together. The first totem will represent their first concert performance of Billadurang the Platypus and we can’t wait to see the others take shape!

ROCCH Awards

It’s been about a month since our last ROCCH awards were presented for our kids in grades 3-6, so we had quite a few to acknowledge for the past few weeks at Friday’s assembly. A massive well done to all the kids for being noticed for outstanding efforts at school. We’re really proud of you all. Well done!

School Bus Travel for 2020

Families who are eligible and wish to use one of the three country bus services next year are required to complete and return a new application form for their child/children and return it to the office by the end of Term 4.

Likewise, if your child/children attend our Scotsburn campus and would like to use our between campus service, a new application form is also required.

If your child/children are already bus travellers, we will be sending a form home with the eldest child in the family in the next few weeks. For new travellers, please call into the office to see Mel for an application form and further details.

Please note: All current bus rolls will be cleared at the end of Term 4 and only children for which we have new application forms for will be permitted to travel.

Thank you for your understanding.
