Literacy in Year Three/Four

SPELLING

Over the last few weeks the Year Three/Four students have been working hard during their reading, writing and spelling lessons. The MultiLit spelling program that we have introduced this year, has been assisting students in understanding a variety of different sounds and introducing new tricky/useful words. Students have undertaken a variety of spelling tests in correspondence with MultiLit. The students demonstrated their resilience during all of the spelling tests provided. Each student was provided with a screener, South Australian Spelling Test and a Diagnostic assessment that focused on non-reading words. It was pleasing to see the students challenging themselves and giving every word a go.

Miss Tilley, Mrs Rowe and Miss Wright are very proud of our students for approaching their spelling with eagerness and resilience. We look forward to seeing what MultiLit can provide the students with over the next few weeks, and we are excited to see the results that it can provide the students with.

READING

Within our reading block, the students have been focusing on the text ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. Students have been eager to dive into a realm of fantasy and explore the text further. Each session we have been writing an overview of what has happened in each chapter. We talk about the new characters introduced and the main points of the text. We have also introduced reading groups as part of our Readers Workshop program. The Readers Workshop program aims to extend students reading abilities and teach them to be confident and independent readers.

Miss Tilley, Mrs Rowe and Miss Wright have created reading groups whereby students can challenge themselves. We are so proud of all of the students for learning to be independent readers.

WRITING

During writing sessions, the students have been working on narratives and how we can create an imaginative text to intrigue the reader. The students have been learning how to create a detailed plan and then use this information to write a draft narrative. They are learning to ‘hook’ the reader at the beginning of the story, develop their storyline, and write using paragraphs, correct formation of letters and plausible spelling.

It has been wonderful to see the fabulous writing pieces that are coming along and for the students to be able to share their writing with each other.

We have continued to have a strong focus on correct use of the Victorian cursive script during our focused handwriting sessions. Students have been learning about horizontal and diagonal joins between letters and noting the importance of correct pencil grip and starting each letter at the correct starting point.
