Literacy in Year Two!

This Term in the Year Two classrooms we have be continuing to grow our literacy skills through the teaching and learning of the InitiaLit-2 program. Year Two students have been participating in spelling, comprehension and grammar lessons with a particular focus each lesson. Students have been reviewing digraphs in spelling lessons, learning the features of imaginative texts in comprehension lessons and learning the difference between common nouns and proper nouns in grammar lessons.

In Writing, we have been doing lots of work practicing our handwriting. Activities include using scripted handwriting books, copying passages from the board onto whiteboards and practicing letter formations and use of lines. Students have also been experimenting with imaginative texts and we will soon be looking at the features of informative texts.

As part of InitiaLit-2, students have free-choice of short and extended chapter books to take home and read, with the expectation for each student to have "five genres" in their personal book box. Year Two students have been loving getting to read their chosen books during independent reading time.

Take Home Readers

As part of InitiaLit-2, students have free-choice of short and extended chapter books to take home and read. Year Two students are able to choose two readers from school to take home and read nightly. Students in Year Two are also free to choose books from home to read each night if they wish. We urge families to read daily to help support the learning that is happening within the classroom.

Students who choose their readers on a Monday are required to return them on Friday the same week.
