What we have been doing in English!

Throughout our InitiaLit lessons over the past week, students are beginning to realise the connection between sounds, letters and reading which is a critical understanding for them to develop. In order to consolidate these understanding we have been continuing to focus on students' phonological skills by breaking up words into syllables. For further information regarding this program you can visit the following website:

https://multilit.com/parents/

The students have been introduced to our first letter sound set and have met the characters of the letters m - Maggie Mouse, s - Sammy Seal, t - Tommy Tiger and a - Andy Ant! We have been learning the link between the sound and the letter and have been orally segmenting and blending phonemes. We have been completing fun and engaging activities based around these letter sounds.

The students have been learning the role of the author and illustrator of texts read in class. They have been developing their reading comprehension skills by learning to retell the most important events in a story in the correct order, with the beginning, middle and end. They have also been discussing and recording their favourite parts of stories read.

In Writing, the students have learned how to write using the correct writing posture and are learning how to correctly form each letter learnt, using the correct starting points and pencil grip. They have been excitedly completing their handwriting books as each letter is introduced and completing craft activities focused around our new letters.

Buddies

The last two weeks have been a super exciting time for the Foundation students and Grade Five students as they finally got to find out who their buddies were! They have had two buddy sessions together and have been getting to know each other and have been getting along brilliantly.

In the first session, the big buddies and little buddies were able to spend some time together, completing their buddy picture and having a picnic together. In our second session, we read a book together and the big buddies helped the little buddies complete a cut and paste activity. We meet with the buddies every Friday and it is one of the highlights of their week!

Birthdays!

At Upwey South Primary School we celebrate children’s birthdays by wearing free dress to school (if they wish to). If your child’s birthday lands on a weekend or in the school holidays they can still come in free dress on the next school day. This is a lovely way for the school community to recognise  and celebrate your child’s birthday!
