BOOK  WEEK

Book Week is almost here.

          TERM 4  WEEK 2

CURIOUS CREATURES WILD MINDS

The theme for this year’s Book Week is Curious Creatures Wild Minds.

The CBCA Book Week theme can be explored in different ways.  One way is to see the child as a curious creature with a wild mind. The other is to explore curious creatures in the world and from the imagination.

We are continuing to share  the short listed books for 2020  during lessons. Stage 2/3 have enjoyed sharing the Picture Books for 2020 while K/1/2 have shared the Early Chilhood short list.

The Good Son by Pierre Jacques Ober has proved popular with the primary students as well as Three and Tilly. Infants children found all books exciting though a favourite was One Runaway Rabbit by David Metzenthen and My Friend Fred.

Book donations begin Monday 19th October and will go till Thursday 22nd.

As in previous years the children will be able to donate a book to the library. This is one of the only fundraisers for the library and provides new books and funds to purchase new resources. The books will be in the library from Wednesday, 14th October, for children to come and peruse to purchase. They will be available for 10 days. At the moment unfortunately parents are still not able to be at school, so children will need to purchase on their own. If parents could send the money with them in an envelope labelled library purchase, class teachers can send them to the library or children can visit before school or in lunch breaks. The library will be open before school, at lunch times or after school till 3.30pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

For those not familiar with this fundraiser it works like this. The children purchase the book from a selection here at school, a book plate is put on the first page indicating that the book was donated by your child, they are the first to borrow it and then it comes back to live in the library.

TERM 4 AUTHOR  VISIT

On Thursday, 15th October, we will have author Ursula Dubosarsky visiting our school to talk about being an author and showcasing some of her books.

Ursula writes fiction and non-fiction for children and young adults and her works are characterised by a voice of clarity, yet often ambiguity. She has won nine National literary prizes. Her most famous non-fiction writing is the “Word Spy” series which won three major Australian literary awards and three of her books have been adapted for theatre productions. She has a very wide portfolio of writing – 16 novels, 8 picture books (with various illustrators), 3 non-fiction “Word Spy” titles, 1 set of plays or children, 28 books for assorted ages which are simply described as illustrated books as well as contributions/chapters/sections of Anthologies.

It will be exciting to have her visit St Mary’s as she is this years children’s laureate.
