Around the College

Middle School Chess

Mary MacKillop Catholic Regional College Middle School Chess Team competed in Yarra Ranges Online Chess Tournament on the 18 August, during Remote Learning.

The team placed 1st securing a spot in two State Finals being held in October.

Harrisen Herbert placed 2nd overall, with 5 wins out of 6. Unfortunately making a mistake against the tournament winner.

Lachlan Aulich placed 3rd, with 4 1/2 points will all of his games showing a good number of moves made.

Andrew Martin placed 4th with it becoming obvious that his game is developing in strength.

Jeffrin Mathew placed 5th - when I reviewed his games today, I could see with the number of moves for each of his games that Jeffrin meant business as he quickly finished off most of his opponents that he won against.

Will Davies was on a roll today, which is a great feeling, with 3 wins and 2 draws - placing 6th.

Zephyr Anderson was back with the team today with 4 wins to add to the teams total placing 7th.

Robert Ornsby placed 8th with 3 and 1/2 points.

With the overall team performance and all the players being placed so highly we were able to pull off a team win.

Warrnambool Online Chess Tournament

The Middle School Chess Team competed in the Warrnambool online Chess Tournament on the 21 August, during Remote Learning. Well done again to the team for taking 2nd place in the overall team competition.

Harrisen Herbert had 5 wins - Harry had a solid day today with expected wins against players with similar standings - placing 5th individually.

Lachlan Aulich had 2 wins and a point for a bye, placing 8th, with both of his wins being solid. Lachlan created one of the biggest upsets by taking a win from a player who had a rating nearly double his own.

Jeffrin Mathew also had 2 wins and a point, placing 9th. Jeffrin had a great win over a player who had a rating of nearly 200 points higher than his own.

Robert Ornsby also with 2 points and a point started the day with a cracker game - beating the second highest rated player in the tournament who had a rating nearly double his own.

Will Davies with 2 wins was not deterred, by playing players with a higher rating than his own. When I reviewed his games Will had a considerable number of moves played in all 7 of this games.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge is on for 2020! The aim is for participants to read 15 books before September 18. The benefits of reading for pleasure are many including developing vocabulary, improving focus, improving memory and relieving stress.

So far this term we have had four students complete the challenge. Congratulations to Ella Jarvis-Geddes, Emma Miller, Christine Denbrok and Sage Anderson who have all read at least fifteen books and will be presented with their certificates at a celebration morning tea in the Library.

If any other students would like to get involved, they will also be invited to a delicious morning tea where they will be presented with their certificates.

The certificate is also excellent to keep and show prospective employers if students are looking for some casual work. It shows that they are committed and interested in self-improvement.

Students are encouraged to come to the library to pick up a Challenge Checklist to document the books they have read in 2020 to become a Premier’s Reading Champion!
