READING COMPREHENSION

Last Thursday, class teachers across the school attended professional learning on Reading Comprehension facilitated by Deb Sukarna, leading educator in Literacy. This professional learning focussed on how teachers can help children actively engage with reading texts and read for meaning.

Strategies such as - making predictions using evidence in the text; visualising what is read; making connections with self, others, the world and other texts; building schema before reading (that is using prior knowledge and experiences that one brings to the text before reading); retelling; making inferences; summarising and synthesising, are key to engaging deeply with texts, so that we read for meaning. Helping students develop their metacognition- that is the thinking they do while reading, helps them to read for meaning and become independent readers. Teachers explicitly teaching these strategies as they are an important part of the reading process and you may see some of these strategies in your child’s reading activities.

Understanding how to best support students with their reading comprehension is part of the teacher improvement work that we are undertaking here at Trinity. This ongoing professional dialogue based on evidence based research, is part of the work we undertake to ensure that we continue to learn and improve what we do as teachers, so that we can deliver the best learning from the Victorian Curriculum for the children at Trinity.

Please do hesitate to ask your child’s teacher or myself, as to how you can support your child with reading at home, especially during remote learning.

Finally, we are very aware of how challenging these times are for all of us. Please reach out if you need any assistance, or if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s wellbeing or learning during remote learning. We are all working through this together so it is important to know how we can help you during this time.
