日本語

What a fantastic year we have had in Japanese at Mater Dei this year. The students have participated in a diverse range of activities as they have learned to speak, read, write and understand Japanese. Our online language learning program Language Perfect, helps students learn and retain the vocabulary and structures for each topic with ease.

Japanese culture has also been an integral part of the course. Students have drawn self-portraits in the Japanese manga style, painted carp kites for Children’s Day in May, and created healthy and colourful and lunchboxes (obentou). During Creative Arts/Languages Week the students will learn how to do calligraphy, origami, try karate and perform Japanese folktales. Each term the students in different year groups have made and tasted a range of Japanese dishes such as onigiri and miso soup, barbeque noodles (yakisoba), a rice filled omelette (oomuraisu) and savoury pancakes (okonomiyaki).

Throughout the year, students have participated in letter exchanges, created video blogs about school life at the college and some classes have participated in Skype sessions with students in Japan.  We are working towards strengthening our connections with Japan through activities such as these.

It is great to see a number of students continue to elect to study Japanese each year; language learning is loads of fun and we look forward to fun filled year of language study in 2019.
