HEALTH AND WELLBEING

YOU CAN DO IT (YCDI) / HEALTH

Program Achieve is an evidence based social-emotional learning program that maximises success, positive relationships and wellbeing. Research published over the past decade continues to report the positive impact of Program Achieve on mental health, wellbeing, achievement, behaviour and positive relationships. Throughout the year, we explore the '5 Keys to Success': confidence, resilience, persistence, getting along and organisation, and how we can use these to be the best that we can be.

In Semester 1, we are focussing on achievement and relationships. Our focus will be around confidence, persistence, goal setting, time management, teamwork, values, character strengths and getting along. We will celebrate and explore the similarities and differences of individuals and groups and unpack how we can contribute to healthy, safe and active environments.

Along the way, we are going to meet Charlie Confidence, Penny Persistence, Olivia Organisation, Gary Getting Along and Rosie Resilience.

This Semester we are encouraging students to :

  • Have a growth mindset
  • Work collaboratively
  • Have confidence in themselves
  • Use a positive attitude and persist
  • Celebrate differences
  • Communicate clearly
  • Independently problem solve
  • Fill their own and others buckets

WELLBEING

CIRCLE TIME

We use Circle Time on a daily basis to develop positive relationships between children and we aim to give them tools to engage with and listen to each other.

Circle time can involve explicit teaching and is also an opportunity for curriculum areas such as the child protection curriculum and restorative practises to be embedded.

The circle that we sit in encourages respect, turn-taking and working together. It also helps children work on five key skills, which include thinking, listening, looking, speaking and concentrating.

During circle time we make sure all children have the opportunity to be involved and we follow certain CT rules including

  • Taking turns; no interrupting
  • Allowing children to ‘pass’ if they don’t want to speak;
  • Valuing all contributions

We see Circle Time as having many benefits for children including

  • Improved oral language skills
  • Increased self-esteem
  • A sense of community
  • Improved problem-solving skills
  • A sense of responsibility
  • Improved relationships between children

HEALTHY MIND

We encourage students to to be in touch with their emotions and to understand how they are feeling. We provide them with examples and practise ways that they can self regulate when not they are not in the green zone.

RELAXATION

Regular relaxation can help improve children's concentration, achievement, attendance, behaviour and general health and wellbeing. Learning relaxation from a young age helps children manage their stress and stay in control and focussed. Children who are taught simple relaxation and concentration techniques are able to apply them to all areas of the curriculum and other parts of their life.

Physical outcomes include:

Self-awareness, relaxes muscles, calms nerves, boosts immune system and general wellbeing.

Mental outcomes include:

Sharpens concentration and clarity, promotes positive thinking, improves memory and recall, reduces stress and tension, develops imagination and creativity.
