SPECIALIST SUBJECTS

SCIENCE

The main focus in Term One is physical sciences where the students will explore aspects of sound and light from a range of sources. The aim is for students to recognise that senses are used to learn about the world around us: our eyes to detect light, our ears to detect sound, and touch to feel vibrations.

Ideas / activities include:

  • identifying the sun as a source of light
  • recognising that objects can be seen when light from sources is available to illuminate them
  • understanding the terms: natural light, reflected light and artificial light / light made by people
  • exploring different ways to produce sound using familiar objects and actions such as striking, blowing, scraping and shaking
  • comparing sounds made by musical instruments using characteristics such as loudness, pitch and actions used to make the sound

Later this term, we will  be investigating how a push or a pull affects how an object moves or changes shape.

The Term Two area of study is chemical science.

Understandings / investigations will include:

  • everyday materials can be physically changed in a variety of ways.
  • the effects of interacting with materials
  • different materials can be combined for a particular purpose.
  • certain materials and resources have different uses.

All Mellor students participate in a 100 minute, double lesson of Science, per week.  Mellor Science lessons - Monday: M6, Tuesday: M5 and M3, Wednesday: M4, Thursday: M2

P.E.

Children’s engagement and enthusiasm towards physical activity is great for general wellbeing.

60 minutes of  physical activity everyday promotes a healthy heart, healthy mind and healthy body. Benefits for keeping active include increasing happiness, being challenged, increasing academic performance and on task behaviour as well as building self-esteem and self-efficacy amongst students.

Being active is easy and can be as simple as active home chores, going to a park or taking your dog for a walk around your local area.

This semester, children will continue to develop and master fundamental movement skills, through cooperative team building games and health and fitness games. Children will practise and develop locomotor skills, hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness and object placement and control. Catching, throwing, bouncing  and dribbling a variety of small and large balls will be explicitly taught and skills transferred in team based games. Children will identify the learning intention of each lesson and follow the success criteria to be successful. They will reflect on new skills introduced using technical vocabulary and be given opportunities to test alternatives to solve movement challenges.

Children will explore basic movement patterns like jumping, running, dodging and weaving to be successful in all sports. They will understand the benefits of being healthy and physically active and apply strategies for working cooperatively and apply rules fairly in team games. Children will use decision-making and problem-solving skills when solving movement tasks safely, learning to follow basic game rules. Every lesson, children are given opportunities to reflect on what went well and articulate their strengths and areas of improvement. They will engage in conversations with their peers and use reflection  journals to record their thinking. Using the teaching personal and social responsibility model, children will learn life and social skills during physical activities with a strong focus on respect and effort.

Throughout the semester, children will be involved in sporting clinics, explicitly teaching children skills  that may inspire them to learn a new sport.

Sports Day will be held in term 4, enabling children to develop sportsmanship skills and display fair play. Children can earn team points in lesson time by upholding the LNPS values-  care and concern, pursuit of excellence, respect and honesty. The points are recorded and contribute to their sports day team's total, celebrated at the end of the year.

Sports Day T-Shirts can be purchased from our online shop for $18.

Students are reminded to wear suitable clothing and footwear to all PE lessons to ensure their full participation.

Our Mellor PE lessons are held on Tuesday ( M4), Wednesday (M2) and Thursday (M3,M5 and M6)

GERMAN

All students take part in one 50 minute German lesson each week.   Language is introduced in context through familiar routines, games, songs and repetition. Students make connections between English and German.  A range of learning experiences allow students to gain confidence using the language.

Knowing about language and relating it to the students' own experiences helps them to make connections that link to everyday literacy.  Words can look similar but sound different, and nouns have capital letters in German.  Language learning lends itself to cultural awareness, making comparisons not only between Australia and Germany but also  individual students' cultural backgrounds and experiences.

Please encourage your child(ren) to tell you about what they have been learning in German. See what they can teach you!
