HASS, ARTS & TECHNOLOGY

HASS

HASS is short for Humanities and Social Sciences. It encompasses History and Geography and we use the Inquiry learning approach.

This semester, we are focusing on History. We will look at and inquire about how jobs and roles have changed over time in our families and local community. We will focus on HASS vocabulary to assist with our inquiry. These words will be sent home for the students to learn in future homework grids.

WHAT IS INQUIRY?

Inquiry is an approach to learning that involves a process of exploring the natural or material world, and that leads to asking questions, making discoveries, and testing those discoveries in the search for new understanding. Students are encouraged to initiate their own topics or areas that they are interested in learning more about by posing wonderings or questions they have about a topic. Because students have chosen an aspect they are interested in, they are highly motivated to find out about it.

ARTS

The Arts includes the following components : Drama, Music, Dance, Media Arts and Visual Arts. In Term 1, we will be focussing on visual arts and in Term 2 the focus will be drama.

Visual Arts. Students view artworks and discuss why and how they are created, become aware of visual conventions and learn to notice visual detail. They will experiment with applying visual conventions such as line, shape, colour and texture, as well as looking at different forms, styles, techniques, materials and technologies to create their own artworks.

Drama. This will involve students making, performing, analysing and responding to drama. Students will become aware of role and situation as they listen and respond, explore voice and movement and learn how their ideas can be expressed through role play and story telling.

TECHNOLOGY

All Year 1 and 2 students have the opportunity to use information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the form of iPads and Chromebooks, provided in each learning area, to support and enhance teaching and learning programs at LNPS.  The purpose of ICTs is to enable students to develop research skills, become fluent with device functions and features of programs, to stimulate creativity and to develop responsible internet citizens with an awareness of the need for cyber safety.
