AFL/AFLW

If you are wondering why your son/daughter have been coming home sweaty, tired but happy it is because we have literally hit the ground running in our program. Developing a base level of fitness and establishing the way we do things in the AFL/AFLW program has been our focus to start the term. Alongside concentrating on the fundamentals especially ground balls. The coaching staff have enjoyed reacquainting themselves with past students and welcoming the new students to the program, introducing them to AFL vision.

Basketball

All year levels have made a great start to the new school year. It has been exciting to see students back on court and hear them catching up and discussing results in VJBL grading matches. The focus for the first couple of weeks has been on game style, revisiting fundamental skills, working on developing fitness and conditioning and introducing our new students to our program philosophies.

We are very proud of the following students and wish to acknowledge their outstanding achievements:

Sienna Harvey – COE scholarship

Nate Hargreaves & Max Zalakos – Vic Country U18 State Team

Addi Baars, Maisie Corcoran, Loni Williams, Jack McGough and Kye Kelly – invited to U/16 Vic Country State Combine

Keely Burland, Missy Richmond, Kye Kelly, Jack McGough, Annie Poon, Lexie Whatley, Max Zalakos, Maisie Corcoran, Loni Williams and Addi Baars – all members of 2022 State Development Program.

Netball

With great excitement and enthusiasm that the inaugural Specialist Sports Netball Program commenced its first week as a new sport at Western Heights College. It was wonderful to meet all the eager participants. Weeks One - Three have included fitness testing, introduction to strength and conditioning, HCR and most excitingly our first on court session. The focus for students over this first couple of weeks is familiarising themselves with facilities and coaches and importantly setting the standard of expectation for our training and learning environment, so participants can thrive as both students and athletes.

Thank-you for the warm welcome to WHC from staff and the school community. I cannot wait to see the participants develop and the Specialist Sports Netball Program grow.

Other Sporting News:

A special mention also to Zander Bailey, who is a member of the Basketball program and has recently started rowing. Zander has entered 4 regattas and has been successful in all of them. He has now won the MU151X four times in a row!!  We are looking to introduce an indoor rowing program at Western Heights (more details to come).  Corio Bay rowing club have forwarded this information for any students who are interested in learning how to row:

Corio Bay are commencing a coaching trial of two days a week for Juniors and other members who currently don't have any coaching available to them.

The trial will be Tuesday night’s 4-6pm and Sunday 9am (commencing this week Sunday 13th Feb 2022). We plan to have some crew boats, doubles and singles dependent on uptake of the program and review in a few weeks.

If you would like to be involved this Sunday, it would be appreciated if you could rsvp to Holly Fowler at captain@coriobayrowing.com so we can try and plan the first session with enough coaches. Otherwise, you’re welcome to just turn up on the day, meeting out the front of the boatshed.
