Twilight Swimming Carnival

The 2022 Mater Dei Catholic College Twilight Swimming Carnival was held on Thursday 3 February, and for the second year the event was held as “competitors only” and without spectators in attendance due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions.
Despite this, a large number of students, led proudly by our seniors, competed with great spirit under the College catch-cry of “5 Houses- 1 Home” in diving and championship events. A big thank you must go to all staff for their hard work in ensuring another successful College event.
The Mater Dei Swimming Carnival aims to provide opportunity for competition as well as participation. Despite the circumstances surrounding the carnival, to have over 250 students in attendance and competing in events showed a fantastic school and House spirit and a willingness to participate by those students who attended the carnival.
A big thank you must go to all volunteers and staff for their hard work in ensuring another successful College event.
The atmosphere of the carnival was a little different but this didn’t seem to affect our swimmers. 2022 saw the girls dominate with Abbie Donelan, Chloe Donelan and Natalia Horsley combining to break 5 athletes combine to break records in 7 individual events, whilst the Carroll 13 Boys broke their relay record. Given the quality of swimmers we have witnessed at our carnivals over the past few years, this performance is most impressive.
Among these records some highlights of the night included:
- 𝐀𝐛𝐛𝐢𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝟏𝟑 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫-𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐟𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝟑𝟎 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟓𝟎𝐦 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐲𝐥𝐞.

After a night of close competition, all Houses were eager to see who would be crowned House Champions for 2022. Kennedy edged out Sherrin in the Girls competition, but Sherrin dominated the Boys and finished a close second in the Girls. This saw Sherrin House clear winners as they took out the trophy for the second year in a row.
Congratulations to Sherrin House and to all who participated in the true spirit of the evening.
