Our newest students have started their formal spelling/phonics program, commencing with the word "cat". They are using their phoneme fists to help them to identify the sounds in words.
This fortnight has also included the following highlights:
Grades 1 and 2
Grade 1 this week has been very focused on reading and writing with the commencement of writers' and readers' workshops. The Five Chinese Brothers story has sparked discussions about superpowers (what would your superpower be?). Sustained reading is something that all of our students are working on - building their reading stamina is an important part of learning.
In maths, students have been ordering numbers. Students are also realising that maths is for everyone and there is no such thing as a "maths person".
Grade 2 students have been completing their "I am" poems as they explore the genre of "autobiography" and they look forward to publishing their poems this week. They have also been sharing information about themselves by bringing "Me Bags" to school to show their classmates the things that are important to them.
Like our grade 1 students, grade 2 students continue to focus on having a "growth mindset" in maths, attempting various mathematical activities to grow their capabilities.
Gratitude is a focus for Social and Emotional Learning. Safi (grade 2): "We also learned about the Aboriginal People. People from England came and took over their land"
Mee-Joo: " I am grateful for my brother because he is annoying and he sometimes tickles me."
Jake S: "I am grateful for my puppy, Luna, who we got just before Christmas. She always gives me cuddles and kisses."
Louise: "I am grateful for my Mum and dad's cat, Tilly, because she is really nice and sometimes she crawls over my back. I made a little toy for her to play with."
Grades 3 and 4
Swimming Lessons have dominated the last fortnight - check out some of the photos below!
In other grade 3 and 4 news, students have been learning about angles (grade 4), time (grade 3) and have been visited by Healthy Harold from Life Education who talked to them about cyber safety. Reading groups have commenced for grade 3 students, while grade 4 students are focused on reading comprehension.
Grades 5 and 6
Swimming has been a huge highlight for our senior students, but they have also managed to squeeze in a lot of learning:
