FRIENDSHIP BUILDING: As we transition back to playground play we are noticing that our students are requiring support to socialise, join games and play appropriately with others.

Some of the ways we are supporting students in the playground to rebuild connections in the coming weeks are:

  • Play stations have been set up across the playground for students to engage in boardgame play, art and crafts, building and lego. These stations are often found just outside external classroom doors or in the West Playground.
  • The Friendship Seat is a great place for students to go if they are finding it hard to find a friend, and someone will come and help them.
  • Numerous staff members are on duty at recess and lunch in all play areas and can be identified by the yellow vest if support is needed. Please encourage your child to seek a yard duty teacher out, it is much easier to support our students in the moment then it is to unpack and resolve once they are at home.
  • Grade 6 Lunch Clubs will begin next week – Grade 6 leaders will be running different outdoor activities at lunch time for students to join in. These are optional, and support students who might be a little unsure in the playground space. We’ll share the timetable with you in our next newsletter, once our leaders have confirmed their sessions.
  • Our Library will be re-opened for lunch times Tues – Thurs in the coming weeks.
  • Stay tuned for an exciting new initiative to be led by our 2022 SRC – Student Representative Council members will be finalised by next week. Grade 2-5 classes have the opportunity to nominate two peers to represent their classroom community.
  • Social and Emotional learning programs are integrated across the curriculum, with explicit teaching sessions multiple times a week focussed on social skill building, emotional regulation, safe play and the practice of Gratitude Empathy and Mindfulness.

How can you help at home?

Children come to school to learn and make mistakes, in curriculum and personal and social capability. We use restorative chat at school to support reflection and resolution when things don’t go according to plan.

You might like to consider using similar language to support your child to be solution oriented when they come home and debrief at the end of the day. We thank you in advance for your partnership in supporting your child in the best possible way.
