The architects have been working diligently during the school holidays. They have engaged an interior design consultant to look at the materials and colours inside the new building. Students who were shown the progress so far were very pleased to see some of their ideas incorporated into the building.
The colours are based around an indigenous story by Auntie Doreen Garvey Wandin - an elder of the local Wurundjeri people. The colours represent the river and the surrounding grasslands
The story " Durrung of the Yanyan" tells the story of a young man "Yan yan" who wanted to become a great hunter to provide food for his people. The Wirrirrap (medicine man) granted the Yanyan those powers. The Yanyan became a great hunter for his people until he became greedy and arrogant. During a big storm on the river when the Yanyan thought he was going to drown he again appealed to the Wirrirrap to save him. The Wirrirrap reminded the young man he had lost his good intentions. The Wirrirrap saved the young man but turned him into a platypus.
As part of the welcoming environment for the indigenous community, secondary students were consulted on a name for the building using Wurundjeri words. Students discussed the story and voted for the "Yaluk" - which means river.
