Primary School

Dear Families,

I am so thrilled to be back onsite after 3 months leave caring for my daughter. It has been so lovely coming back to such a positive environment and I have loved coming into the classrooms working with students. We are such a wonderful and supportive community and I feel fortunate to be a part of it.

The end of term 2 is a very busy time! We have a lot happening over the next few weeks.

Here are some key events I’d like you to jot down in your diaries…

  • PUPIL FREE DAY Friday June 17th (please book in OHSC for supervision on that day)
  • 3 WAY CONFERENCES (3WC) (Primary school only) The conferences will be held either by phone or in person depending on parent preference.
  • 3WC dates: Tuesday June 21st for P-2 families and Wednesday June 22nd for 3-6 families.
  • PREP ENROLMENT DRIVE/ MARKET DAY Thursday June 16th. We invite our school community to bring along any future preps ready to enrol for 2023. A table will be set up at the market on the day with enrolment forms. I hope to see you there.
  • Sam Luck will be hosting an information session for all CC parents on DATA IN SCHOOLS referencing our  Collingwood College student data. This will Commence at 4pm in the Library.

WINTER SOLSTICE FESTIVAL 2022

This year the leadership team have worked in conjunction with the Collingwood College staff  to devise a wonderful event to observe the Winter Solstice. It's a tradition we hold dearly at CC. This year the Winter Solstice will operate in a new iteration. Covid did of course impact the way we observe this event, however it has brought about new opportunities and innovative ways to host the event.

On the week beginning June 20th, students in P-6 will be making lanterns.

The year 3-6 Steiner classes will have the opportunity to choose a night in that week to do a lantern walk offsite. Class carers will be asked to work with their own class group to coordinate this. I have been told that this worked very well over the covid period and many families enjoyed the flexibility of this style of event.

P-2 Steiner and main program families will participate in a lantern walk and enjoy a Puppet show hosted by the College of Teachers on THURSDAY JUNE 23rd from 4pm-6pm. This event will be hosted onsite starting at 4pm in the Theatre followed by soup/sharing of food in the P-2 classrooms at 4.30pm. A short lantern walk on the school grounds will follow. The event will promptly conclude at 6pm.

I look forward to seeing families during the Winter Solstice week.

Rejoice Primary School Production - Mini White Night

Rejoice is an original whole Primary School production created by the students. Students made the props and wrote their own songs. The production was Kindly supported by the City of Yarra.

Classes worked on drawings which were later created into a Mini White Night by artists Daniel Calvo and Angela Hernandez from Mosser Studio.

A special gift made by the students was given to every family during the performance.

The Mayor Sophie Wade and the Arts officer Olivia Allen Community Arts Officer, as well as other councillors from The City of Yarra attended the event.

Maze 2020-2022

Prep to 6 students have been working on creating a life size Maze using cardboard boxes. The Maze has taken Two years to make and the students enjoyed walking and running through it as it was presented as part of The Arts Festival together with the Secondary School.

Year 3-4 Reggio National Reconciliation Week Recognition

Year 3-4 recognised National Reconciliation week through art work and learning about several famous Aboriginal Australians.

Year 3-6 Reggio Toolangi Camp

At camp on the first day it was so fun! First we had a snack and relaxed, while the camp staff talked about the rules. Then we got to see our cabin. The cabins were a little small but we all unpacked our stuff and by the time we finished the bell went.

Our first activity was about to start.

They put everyone in groups and the activities began.

My personal favourite was definitely the RAFT BUILDING!!! Me, Clem and Lottie slowly walked in the lake. It was ICY COLD. When we got on the raft the raft was tilting backwards and forwards. Even though we tried our best it did not come out as well as we thought it would.

Overall the nature was amazing. It was an old forest and there was bark coming off all the gum trees. On the last day we saw a wombat! By the end we were all looking really tired but also excited for camps ahead!!

Class 6 Steiner - Kooyoora Camp

6C and 6D undertook a camp at Kooyoora, as a part of their main lesson studies on Geology and Astronomy. It allowed students to explore and engage in the bush environment, which provided them ample time to respect and work with the elements, take reasonable risks and work as a team and develop student self responsibility. The students had the opportunity to traverse across large granite boulders and climb through the 'Big Squeeze', which frightened students to begin with, however it helped them overcome mental barriers and it ended up being the students' favourite activity.

We enjoyed the native wildlife, specifically wallabies and kangaroos and visited a disused quartz mine. An early morning awakening provided an opportunity to witness a stunning sunrise over the hills. The evenings provided a unique look into the night sky which was wide, open, and stunning. They associated this with Aboriginal legends which lead perfectly into the Welcome to Country. Amazing Elder Aunty Marilyn Welcomed the students to Country and demonstrated a traditional smoking ceremony. The students could smell the eucalyptus leaves and hear her entrancing voice. They ended their nights with singing around an open fire, except the last night when they enjoyed a game of Stalk the Lantern in the pitch black.

Overall it was a camp to remember, with the students coming back grounded and filled with a vast array of geological knowledge. The students' behaviour and self-reliance was exemplary!
