On the last week of Term 1, students from 7 Green went on an excursion to the NGV to see the Bark Ladies exhibition, as an introduction to our art appreciation unit on Indigenous art. We explored a wide range of abstract, multicolor, patterned indigenous artworks Yirrkala, situated on Yolgnu country in Australia’s northern region of Arnhem Land. Each of us chose an artwork that we really admired to use as the focus for our assignment. We will talk about the artwork, including where it comes from, the main components of it, and then personally reflect on it to deepen our understanding of the richness and complexity of our first nation’s art and culture. We all had a really enjoyable time. I would sincerely like to thank Mr. Martin McInerney and Mr Josh Callaghan for taking our class to this exciting excursion.

This Term the Year 8 Art classes are learning about the Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo Art Movements and will be visiting the NGV to view artworks from this period.
8 Green visited the National Gallery of Victoria on 4 May to see ‘The Banquet of Cleopatra’, which was displayed on Level 2 in the 17th to 18th Century European Paintings Gallery. Going on our first excursion in a long time was such a joy and seeing the beauty of this particular painting was a great experience. The painting was quite large and measures up to 250.3cm × 357.0 cm. It reflected the small details of Cleopatra and Mark Antony’s meeting, when Cleopatra removes her priceless pearl earring, drops it in vinegar and drinks it, to make Mark Antony to lose his bet. Being able to see the artwork up close and in person, helped us see unnoticed details that weren’t clear when seeing the artwork online. Overall, it was a wonderful experience as we were able to see the painting in a new way.
