AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX EXCURSION

On Friday the 8th of April the STEM9 class had the opportunity to go to the Australian Grand Prix.

I really enjoyed this experience as it provided both a new experience and a chance to learn about the technology used in the Grand Prix. There were many fun activities that helped us to further learn about technology and mechanisms behind science and the creation of motor vehicles, in this case Formula1 cars. There was the Fizzics presentation which was a series of experiments carried out by a professional to demonstrate the different scientific laws and to help make learning about science fun; then there was the Quantum station. Here we got to play a series of iPad games to test our reaction time. We also got the chance to create our own drawing and get it laser cut into a piece of wood. The fact that I found the most interesting was Mr. de Kretsers’ fact about the fuel used to power the cars. This fuel was called Biofuel and it is used as a more sustainable way to power the F1 cars. Biofuel is any type of fuel created from biomass (plants, algae’s, animal waste).

My highlight of the day was getting the chance to go into the stands and watch the Formula1 cars do their practice laps.

It was very noisy, and it was something that I had never experienced before, making it that little bit better. Overall, this experience was amazing, and it was a privilege to get the opportunity to go to this highly anticipated event.
