Rice babies

Caring for Children highlights

One of the highlights of the year in the Year 10 Caring for Children course is the Rice Babies activity.

Students have been learning about conception, pregnancy, and foetal development all throughout first term, and the culmination of this is when students get to make their own baby out of rice.

After finding out their own birth weight, students come in with that amount of uncooked rice, which is fed into the leg of a stocking. With the magic of ribbons and a hot glue gun, a dummy, nappy and baby blanket, students get to leave with their own little mini-me.

The lesson is always great fun, and students are amazed at the differences in each other’s size when they were born. It’s always particularly interesting when twins, or a premature baby, comes into the mix, as was certainly the case this year.
