Both teams played with great enthusiasm and developed well as a team.

The girls team was made up of a number of students with varying levels of basketball experience, including some playing their first game. The girls learnt what it means to play as a team and show high levels of sportsmanship. A highlight of the day was having all girls score at least two points, with every member cheering them on. Members of Basketball WA commended the girls on their skills and ability to incorporate all members of the team, in particular Anika Heyman who received best team player for the day. My hope from this carnival is that the girls found a new passion in basketball and is something they wish to continue in the future. A massive thanks must go to the coach Shanyka Parker (Year 10). All the girls loved having her as their coach and learning from her basketball experiences.

The Year 7 boys also experienced their first competition representing the College at an ACC tournament. The boys were exceptional throughout the day on and off the court. The team was coached by Specialist Coach Colin Driscoll and demonstrated a high level of skill throughout the day. The boys grand final hopes came down to the last game and unfortunate we lost by four points to Kennedy Baptist in the decider.

For many of the boys it was excellent learning environment to experience many different basketball scenarios. I couldn’t be prouder of the team with their results but also the level of sportsmanship on display and their willingness to work as a team for a common goal.

 SSWA Senior Boys Carnival

On 29 March, the Senior Boys Basketball Team travelled to Willetton Stadium to take on seven other schools in the SSWA Airport Division Carnival. The following students were selected to compete:

Year 12

Year 11

Ben Plewright

Chris Amedeo

Ethan Port-Louis

Thayne Bridge

Jesse Overmars

Ben Berardis

Kalisto Ubu

Joshua Richards

Yawasyaf Yohans

Tyler Madigan

After the postponement of basketball events in Term 1, the preparation for this tournament commenced way back in the summer holidays with a Canons Basketball Development clinic. The team then continued with morning training sessions run by specialist coach, Colin Driscoll, and so the team was ready to give it their best. As a program we are to happy to say that all members of the team achieved this and the team demonstrated excellence. St Norbert College achieved a perfect 7-0 record to finish in the overall 1st place in the Airport division.

Equally as important was what the team learned through this experience. Learning how to work as a team and demonstrating both excellent team spirit and sportsmanship at all times was a highlight, especially as our team came together with players from a variety of levels of experience. Strong leadership was evident from Ethan Port-Louis, Jesse Overmars and Benjamin Plewright on the court; outstanding grit and grind from Chris Amedeo and Yawasyaf Yohans really set the example of the right team attitude and helped us to established our style of play.

Both Thayne Bridge and Benjamin Berardis were the ‘spark plugs’ coming off the bench and could turn the game on its head with their ability to knock down crucial shots. Tyler Madigan and Joshua Richards were relentless on the boards, rebounding any shot that came near them, and Kalisto Ubu demonstrated great strength in his ball handling and found numerous gaps in the oppositions defence, whilst showing his explosiveness with a few dunks on the day as well.

The team now progresses to the next phase of competition and you can access our upcoming fixtures via the ‘Canons Sport’ Instagram page. We would love to have a large crowd of support for our team as we strive to keep improving and represent St Norbert College. Congratulations again to all students involved.
