On Monday 7th to Tuesday 8th our Year 9 Outdoor Ed class hiked along the Mitchell River. We went from the Den of Nargen to Billy Goats Bend campground. On the way there, the mood was low, but we pushed through the heat. Once we arrived there was a thunderstorm, and we were faced with the hard decision to leave now or stay the night.
Luckily the thunderstorm passed, so we started setting up our tents and stayed the night. For most of the night we hung out at the nearby lookout. We tried to fall asleep around 10.00 pm, but’s let’s be honest no one got any sleep. Before bed we made the spontaneous decision to get up at 5.00 am to watch the sunrise, only to find out in the morning that the sun was rising in the opposite direction. So, we ended up huddling in our sleeping bags to keep warm until the others woke up.
At around 6.30 am we headed back to camp to pack up all our gear. We started the return hike around 8.00 am and halved our return time. The mood was a lot better and more energetic. We decided on a different route back to the top and stopped at Deadcock Den to cool our sore feet. It was very scenic and definitely the best part of the hike for me. After the waterfall we were very exhausted but pushed though up the last hill and returned alive.
