Girls Cricket Road Trip

Mr Collings, Emily, Mia, Charlie, Hayley, Indy

Shuly, Grace, Amy

It was a long drive down the South Gippsland Highway for the girls (and Mr Collings and Ms Hargreaves), however, we were blessed with the nicest day of the year, weather wise at least. Indy's karaoke tour was in full swing as Ms Hargreaves worked tirelessly with an in-and-out hotspot connection and the captains worked out the batting and bowling strategy.

As predicted we had to work out a modified modification of the proposed modified rules supplied by the School Sports Victoria but once we all agreed on what would provide all the girls with the best opportunity, the game was on against Bass Coast (formerly Wonthaggi High).

Our girls were brilliant in the field (albeit quiet...an ironic contrast to the bus trip!). Highlights were the bowling of Hayley (which drew comments from locals and most spectators to be honest!).

Amy was amazing behind the stumps, as was Mia too! However, the late wickets from Amy really got us into a great position and at one stage she was on a hat trick (we just didn't have Boony there to take the classic catch but Mia did her best!).

Grace bowled tightly and was our best fielder stopping many boundaries. With only 50 runs to chase, we were quietly confident.

Indy and Amy batted first and although Indy got stumped a couple of times, she batted extremely well for someone who wasn't expecting to bat at the start of the day!

We moved the pairings around a bit to give us a chance to chase the runs late if required. The middle pairings battled against some very good bowling from state representatives on the opposing team. Even the opposition coach was getting nervous as he became very loud on the sideline. Their girls were very loud and supportive, and although our girls found it annoying, they understood that this was an area we could improve on in the field.

Shuly hit some great shots and ran well between the wickets, as did Emily and Mia. Charlie was fantastic and started the comeback with only 5 overs to go. Grace and Hayley did their best as they brought their best bowlers back on. Unfortunately, the girls fell only 7 runs short of a state final. They were an absolute joy to coach and we did enjoy the 2-hour return trip with a little Maccas visit along the way. Well done girls!

Hopefully all the way next year when it will be 'proper' cricket! Go Chelt!

Baseball State

Congratulations to our Year 7 Boys Baseball Team for finishing Runners Up at the Victorian State School Championships on November 29th.

After winning the Southern Region final back in July, the boys were full of anticipation on Wednesday about the opposition sides from around the state.  Thanks to the leadership of Matt Fielden, the boys were quick to put their nerves aside and focus on the task at hand.  Matt's routine of taking the team into the outfield for a quiet team huddle before and after each game has been an effective strategy.  His hitting, pitching, catching and scoring has also been helpful.

Game 1 against St Helena was a high scoring game with the Chelt boys coming out on top 15-13, thanks to the solid pitching of Christian Ilias. With a win in hand the boys went into Game 2 against St Albans with confidence, showing the same confidence and teamwork that had seen them undefeated this year, winning 10-2, with Jai Defina taking two excellent catches at 2nd base.

The final game would be a rematch of the Southern final against McKinnon, however, this time their starting pitcher was just a little too good on the day.  Despite the loss, the Year 7 Cheltenham boys should be extremely proud of themselves.

Thanks to Ms. Hargreaves for organising our days out (and pizza lunch), as well as Will and Ethan, our Year 10 assistant coaches.

Skateboard Sessions

Thanks to a School Sports Victoria initiative along with the YMCA our Year 8 students took part in free skateboard sessions in the last week of Term 4. I am extremely proud of all of the students who took part in the program. They literally supported their classmates to make skate tricks easier and encouraged each other to keep on trying. Everyone showed great determination, well done to everyone.

Sports Wrap

What a year in Sport it has been! I send a very big thank you to all of the students who represented the college throughout the year. Congratulations to all of our Beachside and Southern Metro winners and also congratulations to our State Finalists, I'm sure you can go one better next year. Above all I hope that all of the CSC students had fun and are ready to participate again in 2023.

My first year as Interschool Sports Coordinator has certainly been a busy one and I could not possibly have survived the year without the help of Mr Paul Sanders. Thank you to our amazing coaching staff (our teachers) who took the time away from teaching or planning to select, train or take a team to sport, then would do it all again if they made finals. Thank you for your extraordinary commitment to Interschool Sport and support of our students.

I am already planning and looking forward to sport in 2023 and hope that the weather gods are in our favour for Term 1 Summer Sports.

Enjoy the break!

Ms Karly Hargreaves
