Sports update

On Wednesday the 9th of November the junior girls' cricket team went to Yarraville to play regional matches led by captain Holly Brewer from year 8.

In the first match again Strathmore Secondary College, Monique M (year 7) dominated with the bat, scoring multiple boundaries. Impressive bowling, particularly from Ava J and Eden B, helped clinch the win for Gisborne... or did it? A dispute between the scorers! Strathmore thought they'd won. With no third umpire, we had to take it to a super over. Two batters and one bowler from each team facing off, most runs wins. Eden bowled a fantastic over to keep Strathmore to just 4 runs, so Holly and Monique needed 5 to win. Monique hit a single to put Holly on strike. Dot ball. Then a four! Gisborne were still alive going into the second game, this time against the notorious Maribyrnong Sports College.

The sheer size of some of the Maribyrnong girls was intimidating, but it turns out they may have been part of the Sports College's basketball program rather than cricket because our girls made short work of them, putting Gisborne Secondary College into the regional final in Geelong. Well done girls! And a big thanks to Zoe K and James M from year 9 for umpiring and scoring.

On Friday the 18th of November a group made up of year eight students competed against Grovedale Secondary school in Geelong on a beautiful spring day for the Western Metropolitan year eight girls cricket championship.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl the girls kept Grovedale to 3/91 off 20 overs, in the junior girls format the wickets taken are added on to their batting total for a value of four runs for each wicket, effectively starting the girls on 12 runs. When the girls came out to bat they were keen to make quick work of Grovedale's total however the Grovedale team mostly made up of year eight students compared to our team made up of mostly year seven students had some very fast bowlers who put a lot of scoreboard pressure on our girls. After eight overs the girls were 3/40 meaning we needed to lose very few wickets and outscore Grovedale to win the match.

Unfortunately this wasn't to be the case and Grovedale's superior attack ended up taking 9 wickets leaving our girls at 9/92 after the 20 overs was done. Once wickets are added to the teams scores this left Gisborne with 104 to Grovedale's 127. I'd like to congratulate the girls on making it to the final stage, effectively the last 16 in the state, and for their parents who happily drove them to Geelong for the early start. Hopefully the girls stick at cricket for another year and are a formidable team when they are the correct age for the competition they played in.
