Devotion

In Christian churches throughout the world, the first candle of the Advent Wreath was lit on Sunday. Advent means ‘coming’. It is the first season of the church year and is celebrated over four Sundays before Christmas Day. The lighting of the candles each Sunday helps Christians focus on elements that help prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus.

Each Advent candle can have a focus and, in my church, this week’s focus was ‘Hope’. Hope is a strong theme in relation to Christmas.

What do you hope for at Christmas time? Do you long for time shared with family? Do you hope for a celebratory meal that consists of food that you have eaten for many Christmases in your life? Do you hope that the gifts you give and receive are the perfect fit? What traditions do you hope to share with your family and what memories do you hope to create?

As you prepare for Christmas, may you dwell on the hope that Jesus brings. When he was born, hope came in the form a promise fulfilled. That promise was for a Saviour, someone who would bring salvation to the world and provide grace, love and eternal life for all.

May you be blessed with hope, joy, peace and love as we prepare for the celebration of Christmas.
