Victoria’s recent heavy rainfall and floods has created ideal breeding conditions for insects to lay and develop their eggs leading to an increase in mosquito numbers.

Mosquitoes can carry diseases, some life threatening, that may be passed on to people through mosquito bites. In Australia some of these include Japanese Encephalitis virus, Ross River virus and the Buruli ulcer.

This week a large number of children have presented to the Sickbay with mosquito bites. Parents please take appropriate steps to prevent your children from being bitten.

There are a number of simple things you can do to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes.

  • Mosquitoes are usually very active at dusk and dawn.
  • Use an effective mosquito repellent, containing either picaridin or DEET, on all exposed skin.
  • Wear loose fitting clothing that covers your skin.
  • Take action to prevent mosquito breeding around your home.
