Simply Energy Cup - Senior Boys AFL

We are calling it a win! Well, a winfor the spectators to follow a low-scoring game played by two determined sides.

With a one-goal difference for the last 10 minutes of play and neither side giving an inch, we witnessed a nail-biting finish that had supporters from both sides on their feet (and coaches almost being restrained from the sidelines!)

SNC won the touches: Jesse Overmars was a great strength in the midfield and his accurate clearing kicks found their man. Oscar Butler was excellent in defence and tremendous when he moved through the middle, feeding the ball forward all the time. Joshua Bransby’s great hands took many a solid mark and with Francesco Tilli and Domenic Russell they put the pressure on time and again, breaking Canning Vale's rhythm and gaining many clearances from the packs. We felt like we were almost seeing double as the Bingham brothers Dillion and Blaine were everywhere.

SNC won the strength test: Samuel Berhane used his strength to hold his ground for solid marks and Malkovich Tionisio's power was evident in the packs. Dalton King’s strength in the pack allowed him to feed the ball out to others and he was just as generous in his passing around goals to open up opportunities to other players.

SNC won the battle of the knocks: It was a tough game with each side showing they could play hard. Blade Sartorelli received a lot of tough treatment from the opposition and stood up to it all, taking several great marks and disrupting their flow. Ephrem Tesfaye took so many knocks from bigger players and didn’t back off he kept the pressure up the whole game.

SNC won the team work: There was more field talk among the SNC players helping, guiding each other and shepherding each time to protect our players. Alex De Silva gave constant support helping to fed the ball forward. Kaylum Rogers showed courage and strength as he shepherded the opposition to give our players time to have a shot at goal and went into the packs to take some great marks.

SNC won on Speed: Suglo Morna displayed his great speed and guts, guts, guts as he took on much bigger players to win the ball and then leave them in his wake.

SNC won the scoring opportunities - just - with 13 attempts to the opposition's 12, including twice as many as the opposition in the critical second half. Our goal scorers were Kaylum, Armeyas Dejene-Teklu (2).

We were just not able to win at scoring more goals. Canning Vale’s accuracy was much better (4.2) in the first half, but they were kept goalless in the second half by the determination and focus of the SNC boys.

SNC (3.10)  28 to Canning Vale (4.8) 32

SNC AFLW v Clontarf

On a wet and dreary Wednesday the St Norbert College AFLW team travelled to Clontarf with some trepidation about the tough game ahead of them. The journey didn’t start well when the booked bus left without us, but Mr Godfrey came to the rescue, fired up the school bus and transported us to our away ground, just in time for the game to begin.

Captain Chloe Reilly took the opportunity to settle the team on the bus, ensuring all the girls knew each other and were aware of their positions and the game plan, taking into consideration the challenging weather conditions.

With the sound of the siren and whistle of the umpires the game began in a flurry. Charlize Williams, in ruck, used her strength to win the tap, knocking the footy to Chloe’s advantage and we were away with a raking kick into our forward line. The ball came to ground, our forwards scrambled to win possession with some tough play from our opposition who weren’t going to take the contest lightly. With some strong tackling, good talk and forward pressure, Glenda Cornwall put through the first goal for SNC.

We set up well and balanced our side across the ground. Ella Hackett in the middle used her skills and determination to win plenty of ball and we had the run and speed of Holly Giles on one wing and Zeta Stevens, on the other, who can also play in ruck and won many contests and chase-downs. Jacinta Barraza, Ava Clements and Ciera Power came on as defensive mids and handled themselves well, putting the pressure on to slow the Clontarf girls down.

With the opposition not happy with our goals being ‘put on’ - including a cracker by Kyla Shepherd - they went next level with their efforts, playing a hard but fair brand of footy, which is what we expected. Our backline was going to have to show them that we couldn’t be pushed around, and they did. Ella Reilly controlled and organised them like a General, reading the play and working hard for the team. Summer Pollard showed off all her skills and fight, not taking a backwards step, with Lachauntae Eades demonstrating some ‘run and carry’ that you would expect from someone who plays on a regular basis. Chloe Miller was tough in the way she attacked the footy and anyone from the oppo who had the ball and Charlize Nicolaou followed suit with the pair of them putting an end to numerous forward attacks.

Our forwards dominated the game. Glenda had the ‘ball on a string’, knowing where to put herself, where the ball was going to bounce and where the big sticks were, kicking four goals. She chased, took some hits (from two of their players at once) got up chased some more and just made it look easy. Courtney Fitzgerald got involved by kicking a goal and along with Shanyka Parker, Akeelah Mayhew and Kyla Shepherd the forwards kept the ball in our 50, displaying great skills and determination to help set us up with a winning score. Anytime the ball looked like putting Clontarf into attack, Chloe Reilly (three goals) scooped up the ball, with the help of the mids, gain possession and pump it back in.

The full-time score was SNC 9.6 (50) to Clontarf 0.0. It was a wonderful first team effort which was supported by Sophie Eaton who came along to have a look and help out. We have a bye next week but will be training on Wednesday morning in preparation for our next game against Mercedes College at home on Tuesday, 18 May. It would be great to have people come down to watch what will be a tough game against a stronger opposition.
