Shot at fame: Alex De Silva

Year 12 shotput and hammer-throw champ Alex De Silva is fresh back from Sydney where he competed in the 2021 Australian Athletics Championships.

Not many people can say they are ranked 27th in the world for something – but Alex achieved just this, for the U18 men’s hammer throw.  After taking out two state titles in the WA State Athletics Championships earlier this year, Alex travelled to Sydney for the nationals and, while it didn’t go exactly as planned, he is justifiably proud of his results.

“Athletics is a unique sport – there are very few sports where you’ll see such a close connection and bond between all of the competitors,” Alex says.

“Sydney was successful but I didn't exceed my expectations. I was happy to achieve what I did but I definitely would have loved to do better. I ended up coming fourth in U18 Hammer, missing third place narrowly by less than 50cm, and I was seventh in shot put. Overall the trip was great and I am looking forward to nationals next year which are in Perth.’’

Alex is following in his grandfather’s footsteps as being a shotput and hammer-throw specialist and after graduating from St Norbert College this year he hopes to either study Sports Science or become a high school physical education teacher.
