Caring for Children

Year 10 tradition

Rice Babies

There was great excitement in the Year 10 Caring for Children classes this week as the students were given the opportunity to create their own ‘rice babies’. Having just spent the past few weeks learning all about pregnancy, foetal development and birth, it was time for the ‘babies’ to arrive!

A favourite activity which students really look forward to, the making of the rice babies requires the students to find out how heavy they were when they were born and then bring in that weight in uncooked rice. With the magic of stockings, ribbons and a hot glue gun, the rice babies are born, popped into a newborn nappy, and snuggled up in a baby blanket.

Rice babies are a College tradition, and a much-loved activity for all involved.
