You may have noticed a flurry of journalistic activity recently regarding career activities in schools, in response to a Parliamentary Inquiry into this same issue. Much of the discussion implies that all schools do in this area is play a quick game of matching a student’s skills with a list of jobs and send them on their way with a tip sheet for getting to that specific job. At Northcote High, we endorse the provision of careers education, as outlined in the previous newsletter. Rather than giving “advice”, it is our role to support young people in developing their self-awareness and the skills they need to research and explore, then to make informed decisions about their own futures. When we target and explore a specific line of work, we do so in the spirit of working out what skills might be needed for a particular area of work, rather than looking for a one-word title that can then be used to define and perhaps limit a young person’s goals. If you want to read more about this issue, there are links to some of the articles published on the myNorthcoteHigh Careers page. Read all of them with an open mind, and remember that for each of us, there is a different “right” way of approaching the world of school, study and work.
On Friday, March 2, NHS hosted an event run by the INLLEN (Inner Northern Local Learning Network) designed to showcase and demystify the concept of the SBAT (School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships). Students from 5 other local schools joined us, as did representatives from eight different organisations that provide vocational training and/or employment for young people undertaking these programs. Students heard from an industry expert, Daniel Grech, who explained the ins and outs of an SBAT, and provided insight as to why a young person might choose this pathway. Students were then free to mingle and chat with each of the providers, many of whom were ready to offer placements on the spot if appropriate.
Our NHS Intermediate VCAL class provided valuable support on the day by meeting and greeting all our guests, making signage and cooking delicious cookies for our guests. This provided them with some interesting insights of their own which will inform the next part of their journey as a team. Thanks to all of them – as the adult host, it was lovely to have a group of enthusiastic and motivated helpers who worked so well together and showed such a degree of initiative.
