'I am the good shepherd:
the good shepherd is one who lays down his life for his sheep.'
John 10:11-18

This week's Gospel is all about Jesus as the Good Shepherd and how He lay down His life for His sheep. Without losing the significance of the sacrifice of Christ, we can recontextualise the Scripture with the alignment of the commemoration of ANZAC Day and those who sacrificed their lives so that we may have freedom in this great country we call Australia.

The discourse of John's Chapter 10 explicitly identifies Jesus as the good shepherd and we are His sheep, the flock for whom He lay down His life. Even the Old Testament has a common theme that depicts Israel's leaders and rulers as shepherds. When we delve deeper into both testaments, we recognise that true leaders devote themselves to the welfare of the people in the same way that a shepherd cares for his flock.

We too can continue the mission and example of Jesus by devoting our lives to helping others.
