MATES at St Augustine College
We are looking for more volunteer Mentors in Kyabram
The MATES program is a youth mentoring activity which matches a young person (mentee) with a volunteer (mentor) from the local community. The program was introduced by Campaspe Youth Partnerships in 2017 and is running successfully at St Augustines, Kyabram P-12 and Rushworth Colleges. We are now looking for more mentors to match-up with students nominated by the schools.
With the strong support of the schools and community, MATES aims to:
Mentor - provide an additional positive role model in the lives of young people
Assist - assist and extend the positive life experiences of young people
Trust - model a trusting relationship between the mentor and mentee
Engage - engage young people more into their schools and local communities
Skills - identify and enhance the skills of young people
The benefits for the young person are improved self-confidence and feelings of self-worth and helping students get ‘back-on-track’ with their learning. Many of the students say the best part of the program is just having someone to talk to. Evidence shows that youth mentoring positively impacts the lives of both the mentee and mentor.
To become involved in the program, mentors need to be over 18 years old and have good communication skills that are adaptive to working with young people. Mentors are required to complete four hours of training and to commit to one 40-60 minute catch-up per week during school terms. All visits will be at the school and the length of the program will depend on the student needs and the success of the relationship.
The mentor will need to adhere to the MATES Code of Conduct, Child Safe Standards and to all school and MATES Policies and Procedures. A Working with Children Check will be required which is free for volunteers.
There will be mentor training held shortly at a time to be announced. For more information or to register for the Mentor training, contact Leanne Picone, Campaspe Youth Partnerships, on 0418 146 69 or by email projects@ccllen.com.au or contact Campaspe Cohuna LLEN on 5482 6055.
Your involvement could help shape a young person’s life – please consider this program as a way to help the youth in our community.
