Student Leaders

Last week saw the investiture of four new Year 12 Prefect Leaders who have demonstrated, over many months, a wonderful commitment to the school and strong leadership attributes. In particular, their attention and mentoring to younger students was a key aspect of their selection as part of the Student Leadership Team. These young men were acknowledged on our Edmund Rice Feast Day Wednesday 5 May. Their nomination and selection is supported by a wide cross-section of the teaching staff and students and there is extremely high confidence and satisfaction in these appointments. I warmly congratulate these young men and thank them for their contribution to social justice and college life in general.

Year 8 safety talk by Senior Constable Darren Cairns

On Thursday last week our Year 8 boys were privileged to experience a presentation by Senior Constable Darren Cairns, from the Youth Liaison team at Chatswood Police Station. Topics covered were respectful relationships and consent, online safety, grooming and other dangers, use of illegal substances and safety at parties. We are so fortunate to have this close connection with our police liaison unit and the boys were attentive and learned a great deal towards keeping themselves and others safe. We very much appreciate the work of Greg Virgona who has organised this important aspect of our Year 8 Pastoral Care Education Program.

After School Policies and Behaviours

The COVID-19 Restriction upgrade last Thursday emphasised the need for students to carry masks and wear them on public transport and certain enclosed spaces. Please help us reinforce this message with your sons, along with the need to respect the health, safety and comfort of all fellow commuters, including giving up seats and space to others, as appropriate for St Pius X College students.  If students wish to meet friends after school, they must travel directly home first beforehand.

With Term 2 school operations in full activity, this is a timely reminder for students to be mindful of not loitering in Chatswood or congregating in shops and council or public areas. Students must be wearing their full winter uniform appropriately with pride, showing full respect in and beyond the learning environment, doing their best in all activities, and contributing positively to the wellbeing of all in the community.

Our Phone Away All Day and use of Personal Learning Device protocols are extensions of this education process, linking with our EREA Child Safeguarding Standards 2 and 8 below:

2: Children and young people are informed about their rights, participate in decisions affecting them and are taken seriously.

And

8: Physical and online environments promote safety and contain appropriate safeguards to minimise opportunity for children and young people to be harmed.

St Pius X College acknowledges our First Nations, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and particularly the Cammeraygal people,

whose interconnection with this land sustained and

fulfilled them mentally, physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually,

over thousands of years.

May we learn from their wisdom.
