Hey Science Excursion

Collison-Proofing Cars & Forensics....

Hey students attended two workshops run by La Trobe University’s Science, Health and Engineering department, which provided our students the opportunity to find out how Newton’s Laws of Motion influences the development of collision protection features in cars. They worked in groups to design, construct and test a ‘crumple zone’ that was attached to the front of a miniature test car, aiming to minimize peak acceleration reached during a frontal collision.

The students also attended a workshop on forensics and were able to experience how chemistry is used in the collection of evidence. The scenario was based on a real-life murder case, involving techniques such as chromatography, microscope imaging, Kastle-Meyer test and DNA profiling. Many thanks to La Trobe University for organising these workshops through their outreach programs.
