LEARNING MATTERS

YEAR 10 - VET MUSIC PERFORMANCE

Music Performance at Year 10 has all students heading towards the completion of Certificate II in Music as part of the VET program.  Throughout the course students look at the Australian Music Industry and how they are able to connect with it. What skills are needed to engage successfully with the Music Industry? Within the VET program students are developing employability skills that they can take through to the workplace.

Students undertake three core units - Occupational Health and Safety, How to Work Successfully as Part of a Team, and specific Arts Industry Knowledge.  Beyond this, students work on standard music skills related to theory, aural perception and performance.  By the end of the year students are marked as competent or not yet competent in each unit.

Currently the students are working on group projects where they select three songs from three distinct eras (1960s-70s; 1980s-90s and 2000 till now) and prepare them for performance by changing aspects of style, instrumentation or structure. We are in the early stages with final presentations to occur in class from 26 October. They are being assessed on their ability to apply all knowledge they have been taught so far.

By the end of this project students will have demonstrated their understanding of the following skills:

  • Communication;
  • Problem-Solving;
  • Teamwork;
  • Planning and Organising;
  • Self Management;
  • and Technology use.

The best of these songs will be showcased in the Year 10 Music Night on 12 November in the Lecture Theatre.
