Snowy River School
SCHOOL OF STUDENT LEADERSHIP
Our seven Year 9 students selected to attend the Snowy River School of Student Leadership have completed their nine-week stay and are returning to Shepparton on the weekend.
Kloe, Mikayla, Rae-nee, Sylvester, Holly, Deakin and Dante have spent time away from family, friends and technology to concentrate on developing self and social awareness as well as building knowledge around public speaking, cultural diversity and an appreciation of the environment. They have moved well out of their comfort zones, experiencing outdoor activities such as surfing, canoeing, caving and participating in challenging expeditions. Students have also obtained certificates in food handling and first aid.
A Community Learning Project was to be worked on while away at the Snowy River school. The students decided to design a CLP that would support the merger of the four state secondary schools into the Greater Shepparton College and have investigated the idea of orientation to aid transition.
Last Friday I attended the presentation of the work they have done and enjoyed their, “Transition Our Mission” role-play, highlighting the need to provide multiple transition opportunities for our students who will be moving from WPSC. Their wish is for students to feel less anxious, in particular focusing on the Year 8 move to Mooroopna. When the leadership students resume with WPSC next term they will be meeting regularly with members of the Transition team to implement their CLP. This is one of the ways that we will be embracing student voice in supporting the merger.
