Years 5/6

We did it! We finally got our first day with all our lovely 5/6 students at school. Of course we celebrated with a quick photo shoot to document the proof.

Say cheese!
YAY!

The 5/6 students have been very busy again this week as we mark mid way through the term. It has been great to see students reading and recording this in their diaries. Students are welcome to borrow books from the class library, school library and MARC van for home reading and are highly encouraged each day to be independent in having this part of their daily routine organised.

Interesting...

How do you record the length of something? Millimeters, centimeters or meters? We have been looking at length, area and perimeter this week and we had an interesting discussion about how different people say a measurement and it is a skill we will learn; to be able to convert easily between units of measurement 20mm = 2cm. We also discussed the importance of accurately measuring and being precise with what ever tool we use, "Measure three times and cut once!"

Area and perimeter was made easy thinking of the farm. The perimeter is the fence around the paddock and the area is the space inside the paddock, the space is takes up on the farm measured in square units. We have been practising applying the area formula for squares and rectangles Area = length x width. This gave us a timely reminder to keep practising our times tables to a point of automatic recall.

Area is measured in squares and we created a cool classroom display of pixel like pictures to show this.

Addison & Holly's recount

On Friday the 25th of February, we went to the SGSSA Swimming Carnival at the Dunked Swimming Pool to represent our school.

Holly -

I liked participating in the in the swimming carnival and it was very worth it and I loads of fun. My parents loved watching me. The events I was in were freestyle and backstroke. I also went in a freestyle relay with Addison, Milly McShane and Phoebe Ross from Dunked Consolidated School. I came 4th in freestyle and that was bit I enjoyed doing. I also can 3rd in backstroke which I was really proud of myself for. In the relay we came second against four other teams which I thought was impressive. IT WAS FUN!

Addison -

When we walked in was I was nervous and so was Holly. When we saw the other schools had at least 25 kids from each school and I think they were nervous too. My events that I went in where backstroke and breaststroke. In backstroke I came 4th which is last but I was still happy with myself. In breaststroke I came 3rd against 5 other girls I was very impressed. When it was the end of the day it was time for the freestyle relay. In the team was Holly, Milly McShane, Phoebe Ross and myself. When it was time we got ready and then it started. We came second out of 4 relay teams and the whole team was very excited. I had a lot of fun!
