Prep

In the Year Prep and Year One classes this week we spent one morning making milkshakes to then inspire our Writing session! The Preps got to join in and help make different flavour milkshakes. We had chocolate, strawberry and vanilla. We discussed what is needed to make a milkshake, and the steps to follow to make one. For Writing, The Preps then drew a picture of their milkshake and wrote a sentence to match.

Year 1

This week the Year 1’s had to wait patiently to see what happened to their ‘frozen hands’! There were lots of great conversations happening about what might happen to the ‘frozen hands’. Some of the Year 1 students made some predictions about how long it would take the ‘frozen hands’ to melt. What would your guess be?

Some of the predictions we had:

Raffeala’s prediction - 3 hours                                                 Laura’s prediction - 3 hours

Emma’s prediction - 3 hours                                                    Chloe’s prediction - 2 hours

Olivia’s prediction - 2 hours                                                      Luke’s prediction - 70 minutes

Arvin’s prediction - 30 minutes                                                Eklavya’s prediction - 16 minutes

Mia’s prediction - 6 minutes                                                     Georgia’s prediction - 6 minutes

Alyssa’s prediction - 5 minutes                                                Lawrence’s prediction - 1 minute

The frozen hands ended up taking 5 hours to melt!

Year 2

National Day of Action Against Bullying

On Friday, the Year 2s acknowledged the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. We listened to The Allen Adventure and discussed how to make others feel welcome, included, happy and safe. We also explored the importance of recognising our peers’ feelings. To demonstrate our knowledge, we got into groups and drew/wrote what we may see when others are displaying a certain emotion.

Year 2/3/4

More Research...

The Year 2s and Year 3/4s are continuing to research their chosen Inquiry topic.

Look at some of the fantastic facts that they have found:

Fortunato: Uranus has rings around it and is a dwarf planet.

Azariah: When a star dies, it forms into a small black hole.

Katalina: The Sun in higher in the sky when it is summer.

Adam: There are four dwarf planets.

Veer: I found out that the Sun is going to burn out in five billion years.

Tristan: If strange matter touches a star, it turns into a strange star.

Shamus: If the Earth is facing the Sun, it is morning. If the Earth is not facing the Sun, it is nighttime.

Kaitlyn: There is a type of a star called ‘Proxima Centauri’.

Roman: The Earth is tilted and that is what makes the seasons change.

Raffaele: Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon in 1969.

Allie: We can live on Earth because it is not too cold or too hot.

Austin: Winter is cold and snowy.

Yianna: The moon has four layers.

Samantha: The sun is the center of our solar system.

Aleisha: I learnt you can’t see Venus all the time because gas covers its surface and it is sometimes known as Earth’s sister.

Natalie: The sun is made of different gasses.

Year 4/5

Science

It was fun to make a windmill that works. It is representing how wind energy can be used to make electricity.

I made my blade thin, so they were lighter and could go fast. Yash

I used a basic design of a cross because I thought it would work. Jaxon

I folded my paper to allow space in the middle of the blades, so the air could go through the blades and spin. Chen

Yash helped me to make a design like his and it worked. Izaac

I saw Chen's windmill and made a similar one with only 2 blades and while it didn't work at first, I made an adjustment with the blutac and then it worked because only the paper spun. Ishe

Tennis Program

Over the past four weeks of term during PE, students in grades 1,3/4, 4/5 and 5/6 have taken part in a tennis program delivered by Peter and Charlotte Hubble from Buckley Park Tennis Club.  During this time students have been able to develop a range of tennis skills, including being able to perform a forehand and backhand shot, as well as a drop and hit.  By the end of the program, it was very pleasing to see students being able to maintain a rally in both singles and doubles matches.

The sport of tennis itself is very good for the development of students’ gross motor skills, as they are able to improve their balance, running hand eye coordination.  It was also great to have such positive feedback from many of our students, who told me they were going to ask their parents to continue playing tennis at a local club.  I strongly encourage parents to consider following up on this, as it is a great opportunity for students to develop physically and socially.

Jump Rope for Heart

As you may know, Sacred Heart has launched the ‘Jump Rope for Heart’ skipping fundraiser, a nationwide initiative that aims to raise money to fight heart disease.  Throughout the term, students have been encouraged to skip at home and during recess and lunch times, with the idea of creating a positive attitude towards exercise, healthy eating and heart health.

In the next two weeks left of term, students who have been noticed by teachers skipping with their friends at school will be awarded with certificates, while we will also have a celebration day to conclude the fundraising program, in which all students will participate in a range of skipping based activities, and announce the total amount of money raised.

Just a reminder that if you haven’t had the opportunity to raise any money for the initiative, it would be greatly appreciated if everyone could as it is such a worthwhile cause.  Students have been given pamphlets that detail instructions on how to register online and start fundraising.  There are also fantastic prizes to be won for students who do raise certain amounts of money, provided by Jump Rope for Heart themselves.

Thank you for all your efforts and support,

James

'If you read just 15 minutes a day, in one year you will have read over 1,000,000 words!'

LIBRARY NEWS THIS WEEK

Next time you visit our Library, you will notice we have our Easter display up, 'Easter is Coming!' And, some new Easter books just arrived yesterday and with the help of our mum, Cettina, she managed to cover them for us today to protect them and they are now ready to be borrowed by those keen to have an Easter read before the holidays!!! You will find them on the front of the shelves under 'New Books'. Thank you to Cettina for the other books she has taken home to finish covering so the children can enjoy some new reading material.

Next week you will hopefully see a new display for Anzac Day as that is also coming up in April!

Happy reading everyone!
