Sports Report

Swimming

The GD Swimming carnival was held last week and a full report will appear in this week’s edition. The day was a very successful one for the school and I would like to thank all the parents who came along to support, especially Kim Bright and Robyn Rees who assisted with the College organisation on the day. Our elite swimmers now prepare for the ICCES Carnival at MSAC in Melbourne, on 8 March.

House Athletics

The annual House Athletics Sports are to be held this Friday 4 March at Pedrina Park, commencing at 9.10am. There are lots of opportunities for all the students to participate on the day with a full program and track and field events running simultaneously. A copy of the program can be found in this edition of the newsletter.

I am still seeking volunteers to assist during the day. Please contact me if you are interested in helping for all or part of the day.

Basketball Report

Finals begin this week in seniors and some juniors and many College teams are represented. Please get along to HILAC to support if you can.

Any parent or community member who may be interested in coaching a team next season is encouraged to contact myself ASAP as we are still in need of some for our program.

Any basketball queries should come to myself for Seniors, Under 14, 16 or 18 teams or Miss Brabham for Under 10 or 12 teams.

GD Swimming Report

Last Tuesday, our sesquicentennial swimming team represented College at the Glenelg Division Championships. The pressure was on and our swimmers showed their tenacity, natural ability and sportsmanship.

We began the day with the individual events. Notable individual performances on the day were Chloe Adams and Isaac Shaw, both winning their respective age groups. College rounded off the individual section of the day just 14 points in front of Monivae, everything was now dependent on the relays.

College dominated the relay events, with 12 out of 16 teams winning their races, and the other 4 placing second. Highlights for the relays included the 16 – 20-year-old boys medley relay team, who broke the GD record, previously held by the 2021 College team. Most impressively, the 17-year-old boys freestyle relay broke the GD record by over one minute. Congratulations to Alec Watson, Will Merrin, Tobe Adamson and Lachlan Rees for their efforts. Well done boys. We were the GD Grand Aggregate winners!!!

We would like to congratulate all College swimmers who represented on the day. Thank you for all your efforts and the way in which you embraced every opportunity in the pool. We would also like to thank Mr Singh, who organises training sessions and devotes countless hours to improve every swimmer’s performance. To Mr A, thank you for organising the teams, you work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure we are putting our best foot forwards. Also, to Mrs Outram, thank you for helping on the day, your poolside presence was encouraging and just the support that the swimmers needed.

Cricket

The annual First XI cricket match against Monivae College took place on Sunday 27 February. Monivae was a great host to our boys and their parents off the pitch, while on the pitch the match was played at a high intensity.

After being sent in to bat our boys produced a fine batting display to reach a total of 230 all out. Big contributions came from opener Jack Austin (47), while Jack Wortley’s 34 and Jock Barrie’s 45 ensured the scoreboard kept ticking over.

Henry Bensch got into the wicket column early, producing a superb return of 4/18. Our bowlers prevented any meaningful partnerships from forming and Monivae were eventually dismissed for 114 runs.

Congratulations to Ollie Wortley for Captaining the side to a big win and to Jock Barrie for his man-of-the-match performance.

Special mention to Tom O’Sullivan’s excellent bowling figures of 3/0 after 1.4 overs in the C-Grade match against Branxholme.

Recent results

U16s

College Blue vs Hamilton Cricket Club

A low scoring thriller between these two teams led to College Blue losing by 2 runs on the College Turf. Hamilton could only muster 89 in their innings, with the best bowling figures coming from Tom Heazlewood (2/12). College seemed to be well on their way after Jock Barrie’s 28* helped to steer them to 87 runs with 3 wickets in hand. Unfortunately, those last 3 wickets fell without scoring and left College 2 runs short of Hamilton’s total.

St Andrew’s vs College Gold

College Gold batted first at Pedrina Park and reached a total of 5/176 on the back of some great batting by Eli Hunter (51*), Jack Austin (41) and Jack Wortley (39). In response the St Andrew’s opener worked his way to 43 before being removed by a run out from Harry Austin. After this, the College bowlers worked their way through the batting line up, with Jock Nicholl’s excellent 2/6 and Eli Hunter’s 2/15 helping College to ease their way home in this match.

U14s

College Gold vs Tarrington

A strong performance with the ball limited Tarrington to 151 all out on Day 1. Harry Austin produced great figures of 3/10, with Will Satchell’s 2/12 compounding the damage. Harry Austin’s good day continued with the bat as his 52 not out lead College Gold to a strong position of 1/83 at the end of the day’s play.

Hamilton Cricket Club vs College Blue

College Blue got some good runs on the board on Day 1 of this match, reaching 207/9. Tom Hill reached 52 not out, with Sam Tonissen (39) and Rupert Merrin (31) contributing nicely to the team total.

U12s

College Blue vs College Gold

The U12 College derby was played on the College turf this week. All players played their part in a good natured match that was capped off with a barbeque after the match. There were some solid performances with the bat and little success with the ball on both sides. Some standout scores included: Will Templeton (43*), George Edgar (27*), Tom Templeton (26*), Jack Mann (25*), George Nicholls (19*), Ned Hintum (19*).

Netball

This week’s draw is attached.  The start of the season has been quite difficult, with lots of players being unavailable.  I ask that if you are unavailable, that the player let both the coach and myself know, and then ensure that they find a fill-in.  We do not have large numbers this year, so a couple of people can leave a team very short. This was evident last week when we had a number of people play 3 games in a row to ensure the teams could take the court!  Whilst I greatly appreciate and commend the girls who did this last week in a very warm stadium, I would impress on those away that there are people who we can ask if you communicate early enough.

Please remember to bring forms to netball this week (medical) and hand them in to the coach or manager.  Also, all payments must be finalised before Saturday.  I have attached again the ‘how to’ sheet for the new Netball Connect system.

Regards, Jody Ogle
