Sport @ BSC

We Are Back! 2022, the year that school sport resumes, and it is all happening here at Bairnsdale Secondary College.

Swimming

Although we were not able to hold our own school swimming carnival, we still had some very keen swimmers represent our school at the East Gippsland Swimming Carnival. They all swam exceptionally well, and amazingly all our competitors have successfully made it through to the Gippsland Region Swimming Carnival. A special shout out goes to our intermediate relay team, they competed up a division and came second by only half a length. It was an amazing effort by the whole team, I’m excited to report on what they accomplish at Region next week.

Cross Country

The College Cross Country Carnival is happening on the 6th April.

This is a WHOLE SCHOOL EVENT!

Each year level will be transported to Picnic Point where students and staff will either run or walk the course before being transported back to school to continue their day. Please see the flyer below for the times and further information.

Please ensure that your child’s Compass Permissions are completed so they can participate in the first school carnival of the year. Classes will not be running during their allocated carnival session.

Interschool Sport

We have had a fantastic start to interschool sport this year with hundreds of students utilising the online sign-up system. The Term 2 sign ups will be open shortly, and these will be accessible on the Compass Newsfeed.

So far this term, we have had our senior cricket teams compete within East Gippsland. Our Senior boys had a convincing win to take them through to Gippsland Region.

Our Senior Girls had a win at Gippsland Region which puts them through to State.  Congratulations girls!

We wish all our upcoming interschool sport representative teams the best of luck with their games.

Upcoming Events:

  • Clay Target Shooting
  • Junior and Intermediate Cricket, Golf

Code of Behaviour

For students representing the College, they are expected to abide by the following Code of Behaviour.

All players will:

  1. Demonstrate the school values (Respect, Responsibility and Resilience) both at the College, and on the sports field
  2. Be in class, on time and following teacher instructions
  3. When competing, respect the rules and always abide by the referee’s/umpire’s decisions
  4. At all times co-operate with their coach, team mates and opponents
  5. Wear BSC school uniform to and from school, changing into sport uniform before departing for the sport venue (Please see uniform policy if unsure)

The school may withdraw the privilege of representing the College if a serious breach of this Code of Behaviour occurs or if there is a recurrent breach of this Code of Behaviour after a warning has been given. This has been discussed and decision made in consultation with the Learning Hubs and school leadership.

Lunchtime Activities

Sport never sleeps at BSC, there is always something to be part of and to do.

Our links with GippSport are strengthening as the program develops. We have a selected group of senior boys that are working in conjunction with GippSport to ensure that the program for kids is driven by kids. Through these lunchtime programs, our students have developed their game knowledge and skills in spike-ball and ultimate frisbee and will be starting European handball and a 3 versus 3 basketball tournament for the remainder of this term.

  • Year 7 and 8 students are invited to participate Tuesday lunch times.
  • Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 students are invited to participate Thursday lunch times.

Over the next few weeks, Miss Poynton and Ms Turnor will be working hard to get some additional lunchtime activities happening. We are looking into fitness sessions in our new school gym, HITT sessions, sport clinics, circus and aerobic clinics. Stay tuned for more details as programs are developed.

BARC Activities

Monday, Wednesday and Friday lunch times students are invited to shoot hoops or self organise basketball games in the BARC. We have been asked to give a general reminder that no food is to be taken into the BARC stadium, and that students aren’t to be using the general public facilities during this time either, access out the foyer is not permitted. We are very lucky to be able to use the stadium, so let’s look after it.

Compass Permissions

We have moved to an online permission system through the Compass portal. All sport events that require parent/carer permission will be submitted through Compass.

Parents/Carers will be notified that their child has been selected into a sport, and to then follow the prompts to complete the permission. If students require a paper copy of the permissions, they can see their respective Hub.

For any questions about school sport, please see Sam Poynton or Renee Barry.
