HSIE

REGISTRATION PROCESS
Every five years specific departments go through a registration process to meet NESA requirements. After a full day of reviewing all documentation and evidence of work, the HSIE department has successfully met all requirements for registration. Our department went well beyond what was required and is just another example of the excellent work done by the HSIE staff.
The HSIE department has a new Vision statement which aligns with the College's vision:
YEAR 8 - LIFE UNDER THE SHOGUN
Year 8 students are working through the topic life under the Shoguns and are currently looking at the Samurai and the code they lived under. In an upcoming assignment students will develop a RAP song on either the current topic or the Black Death. Time has been allocated in class for the completion of this task by students.
YEAR 9 - BIOMES
Year 9 students are currently studying the topic of sustainable Biomes. As demonstrated through the diagram below, the world contains some magnificent Biomes that need to be protected and sustained for future generations. There is an upcoming Assessment Task due by the end of this term.
YEAR 10 - AUSTRALIAN ENVIRONMENT
Year 10 are studying the Australian Environment. As part of this course students will complete a RAP analysis on a chosen topic. The task will involve students conducting surveys and questionnaires as well as leading interviews to obtain data to assist in completing their task. The process involves the following steps:
RAP Scaffold
Step 1 - Identify the aim/purpose of the investigation.
Step 2 - Generate a number of focus questions to be addressed by the investigation.
Step 3 - Decide which primary and secondary data are needed to answer the focus questions.
Step 4 - Identify the techniques that will be used to collect the data.
Step 5 - Collect primary and secondary data.
Step 6 - Process and analyse the data collected.
Step 7 - Create a report to communicate the research findings effectively.
Step 8 - Propose individual or group action in response to the research findings.
The project requires the students writing a 1500 word report on their findings. Teachers will provide scaffolds and examples of previous RAPs that have been completed as a guide.
YEAR 11 - This is a busy time with the End of Preliminary Course examinations just around the corner and students will be completely a final Assessment Task.
Finally YEAR 12 - have completed the Trial HSC Examinations and teachers will now focus on supporting students with analysing their examination results and further enhancing their skills in key areas. A strong commitment to classwork is vital in these last weeks. Towards the end of the term students will undertake Line Days where they will have a full day with the classroom teacher to undertake their final preparations as a class before the HSC Examinations in early Term 4.
HSC students also have access to the HSIE Department resources including EDROL for Ancient and Modern History, Legal Studies and Economics. This is an online resource with presenters breaking down the syllabus for each topic that also provides quizzes to help support learning.
